They do fill up, but the sediment sinks and the water should flow out into the land and soak away. The tank should only need emptying yearly or so.
How it works.

before you replace the tank check with the town hall as you will need a license and some stipulate the ones you are allowed to install

Re: septic tanks
If you are careful about what you put in it (apart from the obvious!) then it shouldn't need emptying for years. Ours has not been emptied in over three years, and next door is over 4.
Once a week you should put a sachet of Fosas Septicas (from your local supermarket) whch helps the bacteria to thrive. Use bio degradable cleaners ... definately no bleach products. Same with the products for your washing machine. In this way the bacteria break everything down and it is reduced to white water which flows out of the exit pipe from your septic tank. Don't throw powerful bleach cleaning products down your sink.
If you are having to empty it every year I can only assume you are (a) using harmful chemicals which are killing off the bacteria or (b) your exit pipe is blocked and not allowing liquids to escape.

What are the names of these bio degradable cleaners?

Re: septic tanks
Hi, Firstly a septic tank should not need emptying for 20 years. If you use bleach or other things that stop the bacteria from working, then it will need emptying more often.
However, the difference between a septic tank and a well, is that one is above the water table, the other below. Near Pago (chiclana, cadiz) the water table in winter is less than a foot below surface level, therefore septic tanks fill to that level!! And therfore can not drain away !!!
Most septic tanks round here are simply holes in the ground with a layer of gravel to stop the water making the hole larger.
