Re: Semana Santa
I know, you've seen it all before but I still find it all a bit odd and interesting.

Re: Semana Santa
I went out to see the first procession set off at 5.00 pm yesterday. I didn't take my camera, but there's a good photo on www. diarioaxarquia.com (click on Velez-Malaga). This trono of Jesus entering Jerusalem on his donkey was carried by 160 women - having women carrying the tronos must be a fairly recent innovation, I think? The palm tree on the left of the picture was actually on the trono, I hate to think what those things must weigh. The procession lasted 4 hours so there will be a lot of sore shoulders and feet this morning!

Re: Semana Santa
I guess most of todays processions are cancelled around Andalucia. Such a shame.

Re: Semana Santa
Here's one from Torrevieja, the hundred men carrying the statue are all foreign expats, mostly Brits:

Re: Semana Santa
I'm beginning to seriously think that a lot of these guys just use Semana Santa as an excuse for a bit of public S&M, judging from some of the wierd antics I've seen on TV this Easter.
It seems to get more and more deviant every year.
I wonder what bil would think about it all.

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it here aswell. Carrying those thrones, even barefoot or blindfolded, can't be worth as many Hail Marys as walking the 6 or 7 hours round the streets in 5 inch crippling heels.

Just been watching them lashing themselves to bits on their bare backs with something akin to a cat o nine tails.
Best stick with your heels unless you're seriously into S&M.
