Satellite broadband - any good?
Has anyone any knowledge of how efficient and effective satellite broadband is here in Spain or even better, tried it?
I've seen some adverts from companies (eg: Tooway) and they look competitive with speeds available of up to 18mb.
Thanks.

We've had it for 6 months with a company called Broadband4Spain, no complaints at all. It's been very reliable, we get around 5mbps and the cost is 29€ per month including IVA. With this company there is also the facility to "switch off" for a month or more if you are someone who splits their time between countries (or homes, I suppose) and not pay anything whilst you are away, and no-reconnection fee to pay when you come back. You have to pay for six months upfront, which covers the cost of the equipment and installation, then just pay by the month and can cancel anytime.
We don't have a landline, as we prefer not to pay line rental, and used to use a Vodafone dongle which became very slow and unreliable so this is heaven by comparison. As is dealing with the company, compared to Vodafone!

BB4S and Aeromax are not satellite broadband - they are WiFi - that's entirely different.
Satellite systems are much less common.

Re: Satellite broadband - any good?
We used satellite broadband when we first moved here through Avonline which I see is now Tooway. We paid about 120 Euros a month for 1mb down and a snail's speed up so using VOIP was touch and go most days. Apart from that all was OK. Looking at their website prices have come down and speeds gone up so the service must be better than it was 5 years ago. My only advice would be to use the highest speed you can afford as the advertised speeds vs actual speeds were hugely different.

Thanks to those who've replied. After much trauma with low speeds I currently have, it's now pretty certain that I can never get more 1mb on my landline which translates in reality as half at best or far less for most of the time. OK for browsing or emails but pretty useless for anything else.
I'm considering a wireless service with my current provider, but as I've noticed the satellite service, I'm just interested in finding out how this works out.
'Dunmovin', as you're having this installed soon (I presume we are talking about satellite?), would you mind updating this thread with your impressions please?
Thanks again to all.

I was considering an Astra2Connect sat system a couple of years back, however a landbased system became available through a line of sight wireless link from a company then called Rural Internet.
It is transmitted from a small squarial type dish about 8 kms away and received on a similar dish on the rooftop.
I presume that is something similar to the two mentioned above.
Regarding the Sat systems,I seem to recall that the initial outlay was quite expensive at the time, however the govt were offering sizable grants towards it to any residents who had no alternative.
Wether those grants still apply with the crisis and all I know not.
Looking at the prices in the link I see they have dropped considerably since my original enquiry,so I doubt if grants are needed now.
Subject to feedback I may well consider one myself as my present system is very slow.

Re: Satellite broadband - any good?
Hi I have been using tooway satelite for broadband for the last 6 months, the speed is fast as is download. I chose to pay in england which gives me an english IP address so I can watch BBC i player if I want I have a mid range package at 36.99 a month we use it for daily skype, the kids play games and email constantly and we also run a VOIP phone of it. There is a facility to buy boosts if the kids use all the downlads but we have never had to. The cost of the equipment varies on the package that you buy I had to pay 129 pounds for equipment and I elected to get it installed and set up but you can do all this yourself. We had one problem since we had it I phoned up and it was sorted instantly there is a facility to check your usage on line so that you can monitor it. We have had several long power cuts since I had it installed but it just re/boots straight away no problems and we run it all with wireless. No one else has it where we are so I know there is limited use on our bandwith.
