I have no problems with my Spanish bank other than the cost of running the account.

Then ..... maybe you have the wrong account with the wrong bank?
With my SOL Bank account, they more or less paid me :-)

But isn't @johnnyone non-resident? Therefore he's bound to have costs - surely.

I am non-resident and I do not pay any fees for my BBVA account. I like it because I can do virtually everything on-line. And you can get almost everything on their web site in English.

I shall investigate BBVA and see if it works for me as I only add funds on an ad hoc basis and this seems to be the usual sticking point.

cheers

You may be non resident but is it a non residents account?

All non resident accounts should have charges which leads one to believe you may have a residents account. If so thats a cock up on the banks behalf and I would stay stumm about it!

In our case even though we only moved branches, we had to refill out two forms to prove we were non resident supported by our NIE numbers, and UK address.

It's called the online account. I don't think it's specifically for non-residents. But they definitely knew we were non-residents when we opened the account. I had to show my passport and other U.S. documents. And the address on the account is a U.S. address. They even send the statements to us in Boston.

Daveinspain on a previous thread suggested Evo bank as having no account charges. Access to that account seems to depend on having a certain number of transactions per year/month. There is a branch in Gandia. On my next visit I will enquire.

Well roll on monday. Saturday lunchtime when we checked the mailbox in the village we found a statement.

On it were the charge for closing the account, but also two more charges, 58€ for two debit cards we haven't had since 2009 and 52€ service charge!

This means we have now paid these charges 3 times since September of last year! I know its a simple cock-up that would take seconds to fix in the UK. But here in Spain its next to impossible to get money back, Santander must think they are on to a nice little earner with my account, over 300€ in six months.
