Sailing?

Hi All;

We have been here for a few weeks now and I am keen to start trying to get further with my desire to Sail! Does anyone know of any courses or possibilities for me to get started? I can't read another magazine or textbook on the subject; I would like this year to be more about doing it than reading about it :o)

Thanks!

where are you?

we have sailing schools/clubs here - surely there are some near you?

ours are based in the local marina, so that's probably a good place to start

Indeed - where are you? Also what sort of sailing, choices are Dinghy or Cruising (or windsurfing maybe)?

Google search rya sail training Spain

gives a good few schools.

I believe that once you go east of Gibraltar you loose the full RYA tidal recognition.

Hi

We are Alhaurin between Malaga and Marbella. I would like to get into cruising and should have taken the RYA comp crew path but didn't have time before we left for Spain. Not really sure if RYA is the right way to go in Spain.

Should I do a course then buy a small boat or should I accrue miles through sailing school first?

Thx

If you are resident in Spain and own a boat over a certain size then a licence is needed. RYA qualifications do not automatically count but may make it easier to get the relevant licence.

These are helpful links thanks.

My Spanish isn't strong enough to take a Spanish qualification so I will need to pursue RYA courses for the time being to get afloat.

Google RYA Gibraltar and you will get the likes of www.trafalgarsailing.co.uk

BTW if you are resident in Spain, your boat must be Spanish registered like your car. It can cost a lot of money to do this. For this reason many of the British run sea schools are Gibraltar based.

I wonder why it cost's a lot to register it in Spain. I wonder if it is the transfer cost rather than registration? I used to work for Ofcom in the UK actually, I never thought I could ask an ex-colleague for some advice also.

Re: Sailing?

It is the same registration tax that you pay when you register a car in Spain - and for boats it's 12%

If you buy a new car or boat it's included in the price.
