RYR (again). Flights withdrawn everywhere?

My OH's options have been seriously curtailed re flights now that Ryanair has withdrawn what looks like about 85/90% of its Bristol-Malaga flights. Is this happening across the board with other UK & Spanish airports involved too?
Always did prefer Stelios..........

Seems Ryanair do pull a lot out of UK to Spain over winter, they do often put them back on in Spring, hope so for you. :fingerscrossed:

Dont use them myself, but friends do and have mentioned this before

Well in 5 years-plus it's not happened to this extent before, hence the thread.....

Hope it comes back for you, I know Almería always pulls out and returns in March or so. Murcia I know pulled and Alicante. Friends have just used the Bristol one, anyway fingers crossed for you:fingerscrossed:
Maybe someone will know

Seems Michael had another tiff, this time with Valencia and pulled most of his flights from there, and has also cut flights from Gerona and pulled out all together from Reus. We've always flown BMIBaby from Cardiff, and they've finished operations there altogether, all 10 destinations gone. :(

OH saw a news item the other night all about Ryanair's business strategy. Apparently they are now targeting cost cutting business travellers and so concentrating on main airports to do so. They fly from Barcelona now which they didn't in the past and have cut 80% of their flights from Girona.

We used to fly with them from Girona to other destinations in Spain but now there is only one internal flight - from Girona to Palma.

Theres a lot of talk about them 'returning money to shareholders' rather than expanding their network. So its a depressing outlook for those of us who used to rely on them I'm afraid.

Why the surprise? Airlines will pull less profitable routes in favour of those where they think they can make more money - they aren't running a public service. It's called capitalism, something I thought many of you were strongly in favour of.:)

No need for the scarcasm. The OP is simply pointing out that there has been a great reduction in their flights.

They normally cut them in the winter but not as much as this year and the cuts up here in Girona started this spring.

Don't think anyone is really surprised. Micheal O'Leary has a well documented history which if even if you are only remotely aware of you will know that customer service is not exactly one of his priorities.

With regard to Girona they (the Catalan govt) rather stupidly put all their eggs in one basket with Ryanair being by far their biggest customer. They had a landing fees agreement which still had time to run but O'Leary wanted to renegotiate it early. When they refused to do so he just cut huge numbers of flights from the airport.

As far as profitability goes I never took a flight that wasn't at least 90% full and several times some of the hand luggage had to get put in the hold as there was not enough overhead locker space.

Its not just those of us who live near Girona and use Ryanair who are affected its everyone who works at the airport. They just spent a fortune doing it up - all for a few charter flights in the summer now. They should have done a bit more research into O'Leary before they wasted their money.

Correct.

Same thing applies to Alicante airport, after all that money being spent on the new terminal.

Yes, I don't understand all the fuss about RA, they are not that cheap really.

Far better service with Monarch and other airlines, some still serve food too.

I bet some ppl don't even check the other airlines now, they might be surprised if they did.

Yep, fine if you want to fly to and from the destinations the others go to and from. We have Bristol, East Midlands, Birmingham (one part of UK family) and Norwich (joke, no longer any Malaga flights!) or Stansted or at a push Gatwick for the other part. Malaga is hardly a minor airport, it's one of the biggie tourist routes, I'd have thought. And no, LynnR it wasn't surprise, just a kind of depressed 'not HIM again'.

If other airlines flew from Girona I would love to use them. Before we moved here we used EasyJet the most but they don't fly from Girona. There were 14 flights out of Girona today - all Ryanair and only 1 of those was to the UK (Birmingham), in the past there would have been flights to Luton, Stansted, Bristol, East Midlands, Liverpool, Prestwick evn Edinburgh at one point and doubtless others I have forgotten.

Would love the choice of other airlines but it doesn't exist.

It`s down to supply and demand, if no punters demand then there is no supply.
They are only in business to make money after all.

If RYR's Malaga flights had been consistently below 75-85% I'd say fair point but they weren't.
