I am really fed up of travelling on various airlines, having stuck faithfully to the one piece of hand luggage only rule and put my handbag inside that, then seeing loads of other people with more than one bag, oversized bags, etc. boarding the plane and taking up all the overhead locker space. Wonder what the crew would do if I staged an onboard protest about that?

On a recent Monarch flight the lockers were so full that the crew were asking passengers to take their coats out and keep them on the laps so they could fit more bags in. There was no way I was keeping my coat crumpled up on my lap and risking having someone's drink spilt on it when I had only one small bag in the locker and other people had 2 or 3.

This could have been the problem on that flight. Too many bags for the space. But what then gives Ryanair the right to charge because they don't have enough locker space for all the passengers? Its tantamount to saying get on by all means but we'll still charge you because there is no locker space provided for luggage.
I have never had time but have always wanted to call Ryanairs bluff by saying okay if you charge me more I wont fly , they would then have to get my main bag out of the hold this could take 40 minutes especially if I`d forgotten what my bag looked like

Just beggers belief doesn't it, this is as you say a safety issue. I guess that's RA for you, make it up as you go along.
Trouble is its always the staff who get it in the neck with RA strange policies.

That would be very funny, unless all the other passengers lynched you for making them miss their takeoff slot.

I think RA would give in as it would cost them a lot more to miss a slot
