Residency doubts
 

I want to get onto the registro de extranjeros, preparing for Brexit.

I've been told to get onto the registro I need:
- health insurance
- own property, be married to someone with Spanish citizenship/green card OR have a work contract
- have money in the bank (I've seen €5000-8000, depending on source)

Is having health insurance and being married to someone (green card) with property sufficient? Do I still need a bank account too?

If not UK retired with S1 you need healthcover. You need to show you are financially capable of supporting yourself( discretionary ) have a Spanish address, and also be on the padron but this depends on the office. You have to have paid for the processing before through your bank. If you have a work contract you won't need to show health cover.

Follow Fred's advice. However it does vary by area so if you say what area you will be applying to no doubt someone can tell you exactly that areas requirements. I have recently done this in Torre Del Mar area. I needed health care as under 65 and no S1, I didn't need to show any amount in the bank as I own my property outright with no mortgage, I didn't need to show on the padron in fact other way round I had to show residencia to sign on the padron. Passport I needed and the completed form. I did it through a gestor and it took about 10 mins if that at police station.

I commented on this last week and I can confirm I got my Residencia last Thursday.

I am not of retirement age in the UK and do not have Health Insurance.

The documents I supplied were

Certificate of Empadrimento
NIE
Bank balance showing over €5000
EHIC Card
UK Passport
A copy of the escritura for my property

WOW!

An EHIC should NOT be accepted (can't believe they still do this) as it's only valid for holiday makers.

Also, I suspect the NIE was not actually required as they would have allocated one with the residency card/certificate.

EHIC ? But that is a card that covers you if you are on holiday. It isn't a health insurance card. Why would they accept it ? As soon as you are a resident you aren't on holiday so therefore it isn't valid!!. Sounds weird. Either your helper had enchufe or Andalucía is posible applying universal healthcare but then why ask for health cover.? It doesn't seem to add up. Still if you have residency good for you

I've heard of this before. It all comes down to the interpretation of what the law says, which is deliberately vague and often wrongly interpreted. The other end of the scale is where they insist on private insurance where pre-existing illnesses are covered (not possible) or where there is no co-payment even it it is €1 for a visit.

It's a real lottery, which depends on the office you apply to and even the individual who handles your application.

Thanks for the replies. So this really depends on area to area, perhaps even the mood of the police on the day. I'll be talking to a lawyer and perhaps take another trip to the comisaría for more information.

It may be easier than I've been told... I hope it is!

For what its worth this is my experience so far.

• Ive opened a bank account and funded it with a sum of money considered sufficient by the advisors Im working with
• I took out health insurance
• I have a rental lease for six months (I plan to buy during this 6 months)
• I got my Padron yesterday
• I have yet to get my Residency meeting, that is the next step

I am self-employed in a new business with very small current revenues. Im not married and do not own property here.

I'm doing this in Barcelona. One more point, I did my Padron in a small town next to Barcelona where Im renting and they asked me for a residency card/permit before giving my Padron, The advisors with me had to discuss this with them in some detail to get the Padron issued, if I'd be there by myself I'd have left empty handed. So there appears to be a level of subjectiveness between different locations and probably even different people processing your application.

It was in 2016 that we got our residency in Seville ( at the third visit.) We needed passport, written letters from pensions in washington to prove we had state pension, how much and paid for life, this translated by a registered translator and certified, bank statement ( much less than 5000 euros deposited) , showed payment into bank account, but as this only showed number not names, we needed papers showing opening of bank account in joint names. Copy of statement ( certified by abogado) that we owned our house and that there ware no debts etc outstanding on it, padron renewed in last 28 days, All this and we are UK citizens with no police records etc. As previous posters have said it all depends on who you get and where you go. Sadly we got a "functionario's functionario" BUT persistance got us there in the end,
