Are there any restrictions/laws about renovating property in Spain as there is in France?

I believe in France you have to be french qualified to do any work on property.

Also which areas do you have to be careful in buying property re the government knocking it down or family members coming to take it back or could this be a problem anywhere in Spain?

Yes there are MANY restrictions and licences required - just as there are anywhere. You have to follow the appropriate building regulations and get the correct licences from your local town hall.

Major works will need an architect too.

Yes, in theory, all work has to be carried out by professionals. Certainly electrical and plumbing work does if you subsequently want proof that the work has been carried out to the correct standard.

I don't understand your last paragraph - if the property is LEGAL and you have all the necessary paperwork, then this should not be an issue.

Not even in Galicia are you safe.
