Hi there!
Well I thought we'd left it late to put our house on the market......I was wrong! We only had 3 viewings over 4 weeks, each one put in an acceptable offer and the last couple offered the asking price with no house to sell! So things should be moving along nicely now. I'm still aiming at late October to finish work and have booked a one way flight on 2nd Nov. We are planning to drive over in October with a few bits and pieces. The house is coming along too...despite the builder not being able to work for a couple of weeks due to the water being cut off. We were there for the Moratalla fiesta....bull running, fireworks, partying everyday for the week. Great fun.
Who are you using to move your stuff?

We have just been quoted over £4000 to move us (2 people living in a detached house) to Torrevieja from Chester. We are not taking ANY white goods NOR any wardrobes, dressing tables or bedside tables. They would provide packing and would pack for us.
Insurance would be extra.
For all I know this may be a decent price but to me it sounds way over the top! I know its difficult to tell without seeing our stuff but what do you think, in ball park terms? I will be getting more quotes of course.... just wondered what you think.
We were very pleased with Bishops International. We found them very reasonable costwise and very efficient at the Spanish end.

Not sure yet who well use i am toying with the idea of hiring a 7.5 tonne lorry as suggested earlier in the thread, our house in spain was fully furnished as a casa rural, but we have bought elecrtrical goods over the last year. My wife wants to take over a far bit of stuff, and i have half a lorry load of tools etc. Plus my wife wants to start a toning table business there and we have 7 of those that are huge so a big wagon neaded. Problem we have is storing items before i can fit out shop. Hopfully if i get the licence i will be turning an old coral and small cortijo on our land into a large building, and possibly later a house. All very exciting but my heads going round in circles.

Still we are both very excited, we have met a lovely couple near Abaran he's Spanish and she is English had an all day pool party with them when we were last over, plenty of food and vino tinto.

I'm just hoping our house sells quick.

Take care

Regards,

Paul and Les

As I think I may have said earlier in the thread, removals companies are a lottery as to if you get a good one or not. It even differs within the same companies depending on the crew that is used. I believe some removals companies even subcontract the work now which means total control is lost.

If you have the time and the ability then do it yourself! I'm only taking a Luton van, but I think the chunnel is £98 return (get an early morning sailing), the van £460 for 8 days (it'll be 25% more if you tell them its going abroad), then you add fuel and tolls ...... I originally thought £2k, but now I'm thinking it will be nearer £1500 and I'll get the stuff there when it should be.

I've bitten the bullet and booked Warm Horizons with a quote of £1500 all in for 18 cu mtrs. At that price doesn't seem worth the hassle of doing it yourself. Fingers crossed.........

Well as someone who has spent all his life in the international freight business, let me give you some advice - sorry this is so long but its part of a piece I wrote for a forum on removals - Its unfinished, but gives the most important points:

One of the most difficult experiences in re-locating is the actual shipping of your worldly goods and chattels. Not only are there a huge number of companies offering you the opportunity to use their services, but they all tell you that it will be trouble free and that all will arrive at destination in good order. In reality this is often far from the truth. We’ve all read posts from people arriving at destination only to find that their furniture is elsewhere. Whats that old saying? ….. breakfast in London, dinner in New York, luggage in Bombay!

Here are a few hints from someone who spent his life in the ever so stressful shipping industry and is glad to be out of it!

There are so many different destinations worldwide that it’s difficult to be specific so I will generalise as much as possible. If you want specific help then I have contacts in the industry and can point you in the right direction.

Get three quotes from different removal companies. Prices can vary enormously. Many carriers will not honour insurance claims unless they have packed the goods themselves. When you get their quote ask about full marine insurance cover (get a separate quote from them) and check their conditions of carriage carefully. Check to see if they are members of the British Intl Freight Association (http://www.bifa.org/Content/Home.asp )
It doesn’t mean they are perfect but at least they will be an established company.

Gain separate quotes for insurance. Again be careful about the conditions of cover, i.e. do the goods have to be packed by you, do they have to be packed professionally. How extensive is the cover. Check the exclusions and look for clauses about “atmospheric conditions”. If your goods arrive damp (usually deep sea long voyages) you don’t want the insurance company copping out.

If you pack your goods yourself, always make up a detailed packing list in triplicate of what is in each box with a nominal value (I’m assuming the effects are all used and not new). DON’T attach this to the box but number the boxes (and the packing lists) and keep the list separately as it will be required for (a) the shipping line (b) the Revenue & Customs and (c) you. Mark each box with your destination name, destination address and a destination telephone number.

If you are shipping to sea voyage destinations then your effects will probably ship in a steel shipping container. Although these are checked regularly it is not unusual for holes to appear. When you receive your goods you must check them carefully for wet damage as they come off the container. Once you have signed for them it will be more difficult to make a claim.

If you are shipping to Europe then it is more likely that your goods will travel in a box van / truck. The same rules apply when receiving the goods although quite often the effects will have been transhipped at least twice (unless you’ve commissioned a full load) before they get to you. Also remember that if your new home is in a difficult location then the effects may have to be transhipped to a smaller vehicle. Again, count the number of cartons and check for impact / wet damage.

If (in the case of international removals) the cartons have been examined by customs then there will normally be evidence of this. In the UK they are re sealed with security tape. If any cartons look as if they have been tampered with then call it to the attention of the delivery driver and then open to investigate.

Buy decent tri wall boxes to pack your effects in. Most removal specialists will supply them. Try to avoid cardboard boxes that you bought your last supply of baked beans in. They will collapse in transit.

Can I suggest that, if you are using a removal firm, that you let THEM pack all your belongings. We didn't, only to find when we arrived here, that anything they hadn't packed was NOT covered for insurance in case of arriving damaged.

Further to all the posts on this subject, Just looking on Autotrader.co.uk and there are plenty of LWB luton vans and 7.5 tonne trucks that can be driven on a standard licence for circa £1200.00, just a thought but if your confident with a larger vehicle, you can fit a full house in a 7.5 tonne lorry move over and either sell in Spain or return to the UK and sell on ebay, even taking a knock of a few hundred its got to be cheep. This route would benefit people in rural locations where an Articulated lorry wont go, draw back you need to load and un-load (could be part of the fun). A couple of the lorries i looked at had tail lifts good MOT and tax.

regards to all. Paul and Les

Mary,

I agree that the price is not bad but 28 cubic metres is'nt much bigger than a box bedrom in imperial 10ft by 10ft by 10ft high, i would think a quarter maybe a third of an Artic,
makes you think.
