Default Registering for Referendum Vote

Do all the registration forms require a witness or does it depend on the City Council where you last voted in the UK?

According to the papers i sent back, you send them to the council where you were last on the electoral register. Had to put passport numbers etc on form - so they could check. That's all i had to do. no witness needed.

Mine had to be witnessed by a UK passport holder, luckily in the small village I live in someone did it for me.If I'd lived in a village where I was the only ex-pat or one where I was the only one voting Stay, then the outcome would be different.Democracy at work eh!

Same here, and a little flurry of email communication followed, we are registered in E.Cheshire which is where we came here from.
Little point in normal elections as MP for Tatton is quite well known and pretty difficult to be rid of.

After emailing the council to ask why they wanted a witness,I received a reply within the hour, that it wasn't necessary to fill that part in (odd they bothered putting it in the form then) It'll be interesting to keep track of when forum members who vote, actually receive their postal voting papers and if it gives them enough time to return them. I've emailed the Electoral Commission to get their comments on the erroneous 'witness statement'

It's very easy to register on-line, just use this link to go to the UK Government site, it leads you through it step by step and only takes five minutes.

So has anybody received confirmation that their application has been received? Last time I registered I had a letter telling me I was accepted and the papers would be sent to me but they never arrived. This time I applied 2 months ago on line and have heard nothing. Discussing this with friends there were 4 people in the group who had been denied and were told they couldn't be traced despite all of them living in the same house in the UK for a number of years.

I can only speak from personal experience and others might be different but after using the link I was contacted by the local council where I last voted. They asked my address where I lived when I cast my vote, now even though they have the information on record, they will not register you unless you can give them all the information they request. So if you can't remember the flat number of somewhere you rented 14 years ago you are in effect disenfranchised.Democracy at work eh!

Hi,

My OH and myself both registered online some while back and had a confirmation email with an attachment "letter" which I printed, then when we moved address we informed them of our new address, again we had a confirmation email and another attachment letter.

Very efficient for a local council office

Steve

Our electoral office has stated that the ballot papers for the EU referendum will be sent out from 2nd June to postal voters. This means you will have three weeks to receive and return the papers. So will be in the hands of the Spanish postal services!!!

My old council have said "Postal Votes will be sent out on or around 1st or 2nd June subject to third parties, i.e Royal Mail, Printers, etc."
Now you'd have thought they'd have had the voting forms printed already. It's not as if the referendum has just been called!

As long as they send direct and not via Malta as some departments do to save a penny then that should be OK at about five working days each way, which is what I consider the norm.

I would have thought that the relevant departments would have been told to be "on the ball" with this as the UK government needs all the overseas 'in' votes it can get.
