Quick Question about Dentists
 

Hi there, this is just an informal enquiry about Dental charges in Spain.

We have kept our (private) dentist in the UK and see him once a year. However, we have been to a Spanish dentist and her prices seemed comparable with the UK.

An expat who lives in our village informs me she has been charged THOUSANDS (about 5k euros) for her son's teeth to have a brace and ongoing treatment and has had to take out a bank loan to pay it:eek:

Is this normal or is she being ripped off?

A neighbour here was also charged thousands for a brace for her boy - the dentist had a monthly payment plan available though, so she didn't have to take out a bank loan

Thanks for that - actually it may have been a payment plan - I just know she had to borrow money to pay it.

Glad I kept my English dentist!!

I reckon my elder dd will need 'aparatos'


I'm dreading the next check up - the dentist has been saying wait till she has all her second teeth - she's nearly there:ohmy:

You now, in a lot of cases, have to pay for braces in UK. The cost is about £2000, - £2500. They are classed as " cosmetic" and not available on the nhs unless your teeth are really bad.

That is crazy, surely it would work out cheaper for the NHS to look after the kids, than pay for all the major work later if left.
When I had a lot of work done there was a maximum payment of about 250 squids on NHS.

Well my son had them free when he was young (he is nearly thirty now).

My word I didn't know they cost that much! I can see that it might be classed as 'cosmetic ' for adults, but surely we should look after our childrens' teeth?

Some dentists in the UK now won't do much work on children.

The synics amongst us might think this is due to;

1) Lack of payment from government for childrens care
2) Will mean more work later on in life
3) ?? (fill in your own answer here)

excuse the format of this note as i am a novice with computers and typing.

i am a London univ. ex Harley st. dental surgeon now in Caleta de Vellez.
i worked in private general practice specialising in cosmetic dentistry for 20yrs+.

My exps. along this COSTA in all types of so called caring clinics are frightening.

My qualifications were used to attract foreigners to the clinics who are expected to pay good prices.
i was encouraged to sell particularly implants and often refused.
sophisticated dentistry is relatively new in Spain, often done by inexperienced
practitioners.

However,what is more frightening is that a generally accepted method of sterilisation (or lack of it) has caused me to keep moving.

Beware!!! they are all full of smiles and promises as they drool over your cash.

You are not going for a haircut.
WHAT is their experience?
Get further opinions particularly by non profit motivated practitioners.

yes UK NHS dentists will now only fit braces if the teeth are "bad enough"

I have paid for 2 in Spain for my son, the 1st was 600€, the 2nd was a fixed one that was 2000€ and we paid 80€ a month which incl the monthly adjustments (it was interest free direct to the dentist)

Not for all brace cases. My daughter just scraped through as about 12 months later they began only doing really badly developed teeth. My dentist said that my daughter would have been a border line case as to weather they would been deemed " bad enough " to cause problems later in life or just to make her look better.
