Default PVP discount on Buying New Cars

Went down to look at the new Dacia Speedway as we have a 13yr old car thought it might be the right time to change but was told that it has now finished as the Government has run out of money!

That paints slightly the wrong picture. The government allocates a specific amount of money (€75m this time) to the fund every time they do one of these plans. It is bound to run out. If it runs out early it's because the scheme was very successful.

They will start up a new one in due course but probably not before next year.

Without wishing to enquire too deeply into your deal, did you PX your existing vehicle and did you get a fair offer on it in your view?

It´s no problem..........our car is 13 yrs old and he just said that Renault give assistance in the financing. On the quote form it says 1400 help included for finance. Now I am not sure if this is just general discount for the finance and if you paid cash you wouldn´t get this or if it is part exchange. He didn´t even look at the car.

The car itself is very good value. Our friends have just bought one.

Seems to the case then that you didn't even need to have a car at all for the deal. It's just a 'discount'. Would it have been better therefore for you to have sold your car?

This is something I may need to clarify. We are just in the enquiry stage. If it is just a discount then indeed we will try to sell privately its been a good car and still runs really well so might get something for it.

As I said, the whole point of the Plan Prive is to get old polluting cars off the road. That's why you have to give them the old banger. Now that the pot of money has run out that doesn't apply any more.

You have always been able to get discounts on new cars but they are almost always given by the manufacturer rather than the individual garage. They are often tied into finance deals.

With relatively new cars then part exchange is more of a possibility but I doubt that you would get any real extra cash for a 12 year old car - it will go straight to the tip.

I need to ask the question then...........it might do for someone as we have had it from new and never had a problem with it.

That sounds the right thing to do.

There is no way they are going to give you any real money for it.

Just try and negotiate an even better discount. They are desperate to sell new cars, especially the Dacia as they are trying to establish the brand in Spain.

From what I have read about their cars the basic model is super cheap but once you add any decent extras the price becomes much less competitive. Try and negotiate some free extras and possibly an extended warranty.

The cars are basically recycled Renaults made in a nice new Renault factory in Romania. That's why they are such good value. It's a bit like the way Seat sell the new Exeo saloon. It's actually a recycled Audi A4 and an absolute bargain!

Just to clarify - is it a speedway or a stepway?

When I bought a new car I paid cash, and had a car for PE. I just decided on a couple of makes, went to the dealers, had a look at was was available, told them what I was looking for, and that I had a car for PE and asked what the cost was for a cash deal. One dealer was prepared to give me a much bigger discount so got the sale. I also asked about delivery times, one was 3 months, the other 4 weeks. The cars were VW golf and Renault scenic, Renault gave me the best deal.
