That's unusual, but seemingly has been done by about 6 people. It seems that the normal is around 350.000 euros, with 500,000 in some cases. In a six hour shift, they work four, rest two, have 45 days holidays a year, and can retire at 55 on full pay until 65. You'd have thought they might have been content with that!
- Prejubilación: los controladores que cumplan 55 años (52, en algunos casos) se pueden acoger a la denominada Licencia Especial Retribuida (LER), una especie de prejubilación en la que perciben el 100% del salario base hasta los 65.

Conspiracy theory: Zapatero cancelled a trip abroad last week to the Mar de Plata Ibero-American summit, so he could help implement the new economic measures at home. I wonder if this whole scenario has been provoked merely to increase passenger rates on the AVE train (their Malaga route has been suffering in the recession). Not a totally convincing theory, I know

Also to give you some idea of how high the salaries are for the controllers, here is an advert for pilots for Veiling airlines.
So first you have to pay for the training €16K, then earn about €840 per month.

Doubt if a bus driver or taxi driver would work for that.

I just hope to God they pay their mechanics a bit more than that.
