Default Private health insurance in Spain

Hi again,

sorry to flood the forum with questions but as you probably already understand I’m doing a “full research” about moving and preparing myself for Spain and I hope it also can help others.

Any suggestions for private health insurance companies in Spain, which companies considered to be good, reliable with good service and reasonable price?

Thanks for sharing.

Look on the forum, this has been discussed many times and people have talked about the prices etc. Use the search facility, simply putting in health insurance should give you loads of information.

Hi one thing to think about private health care does not include pre existing conditions or medication and do not share information. How ever all the private health care I have received has been first class as is the Spanish health care. Shop around the private health care company's and compare price and conditions, Our health care which was asssa who could be difficult at the wrong time, but over all at the end of the day were ok ,I had three operations with them and the service in the hospitals was first class

What do you mean by “do not share information”?

Ive just been perusing the visa requirements for Spain (for a friend, its true this time)

And on the US consulate site, it gives a list of healthcare providers.

Might be of use to you.

I had forgotten when we got our residency certificate. They did not want a policy only an insurance health certificate which was adequate to gain residency. I had pre-existing conditions which did not come up at all while gaining residency , But when needed treatment on private health care it was refused and I had to pay.

Can you expand on your comments. Did your policy have exclusions on it? What is the difference between an Insurance Health Certificate, and who issues them?
When did you apply? On what grounds were you specifically refused cover reimbursement? Who were you covered bye?
Thanks

As you registered well before Brexit occurred your experience is probably very different from what is required nowadays.

Does that mean you didn't know about it or you 'forgot' to tell the company?

Having gone through the pre Brexit residency (post July 2020 regulations) in November 2020.
The Alicante foreigners office was refusing residency applications unless, you had the following about your healthcare.

Certificate of insurance (from the healthcare company) Which has your name and policy number.
A copy of your medical card (from the healthcare company.) Same as above
A full Spanish copy of the policy, complete wording (ours was 46 pages long). (it will have any exclusions added)
The bank receipt showing when you paid for the policy. (stamped by the bank).

I think the policy also has to have "Permanent and continuous" This means that it auto renews every year and is not just a one off policy.

I would therefore assume that applying for a visa and healthcare and submitting to the Spanish Consulate in the Uk would be as demanding as this and not less now Brexit has happened.

As to exclusions, there can be some as long as they are considered minor. And again its up to the person looking at your application who makes the final decision.
My wife listed mild Asthma (she can buy the inhaler over the counter here). This was marked on the policy but had a 3 month waiting time (but they noted that it was something that she could treat herself). It was also noted that they would treat her if it were an emergency at any time.
I have a hernia (that the Uk NHS considered not urgent so would not operate) the healthcare company here in Spain accepted this without issue. And said that they would cover it.

I did not make myself clear and got it wrong my wife says!
We used ASSSA for the cover. I told them I had heart arrhythmia and they said I had to prove that I was discharged from the hospital in the UK before they would cover me. I got a letter form my GP to that effect and so they covered me for everything. However, there was the odd thing that they do not cover and we had to pay for, like the meds I needed and the ink they injected for an exploratory scan I required but everyone gets that exclusion.
All policies have small print exclusions generally, such as the above and you must read them but they none were specific to me once I gave them the letter from the UK.
When you buy any insurance you usually get a certificate of insurance such as for your car. It seems with Health Insurance they do not automatically issue this when you pay monthly. Some issue it if you pay annually apparently. Although we could show the official the payments being made and the policy it was not enough and she insisted upon a certificate of insurance and you can ask for this. Normally Asssa ask you to pay up the full policy for this but I said that was unfair and so within a week they issued them to us. Once we gave them over that was fine. So its worth asking your insurance company for that item when you buy.
We applied back in April 2017 so that was then at that office In Denia. It all varies so much.
Hope this helps.
