Default Private Health Care

Hi moving out to Spain this year and the plan is to be mainly in Spain for 5 years then we will prob be 70/30 Spain/UK as will buy a small flat back home (thinking grandkids etc)
We are aware we need private healthcare so wondering if anyone can advise us best place to look for an overview into best policies , things to consider etc. Can you get global health care that would work for us UK and Spain ?? Is it recommended ?
any advice appreciated pros & cons.
tia

If you do not qualify for health cover via employment for other rights via pension yes you need private health cover to qualify for residencia lots more here:

If one of you receive UK state pension, you are eligible for Spanish state health scheme by obtaining certificate S1 from NHS. If you are both below 65, then you need private health insurance for a year before you can join the state scheme as contributing member. There are a few other UK exportable benefits that qualify you for S1.

If it turns out you do need insurance, first check whether you can get away with a policy with co-payments, as this seems to be regional. Then just shop around - for me that meant walking around the various offices asking for quotes, but some companies quote online and a Spanish friend made a couple of phone calls too.

ps Retiring at 17? That really was a tough paper round!

Hi you will definitely need private health care fully paid up they will not except co-payments in valencia. one way you can do this is private for a year then get residency as you will need this to stay for 5 years then go autonomo. And remember private health insurance doesn't cover pre existing conditions at all i found this out myself and a friend did when he was seriously ill.We found asssa the cheapest but they could be hard work at times. One thing for sure is the health care in spain is superb. all the best Be happy i am

We live in the province of Valencia and can definitely state that they DO accept co-payments - they just insisted the policy covered emergency treatment/ambulances etc.

Co-payment is what you'd have to do if you have excess in car and general insurance. It means insurers won't cover the entire cost and you have to contribute or co-pay.
