Pregnant & Scared #^#*less of doctors

My friend, the same one I posted about some while back, now confirmed pregnant, but very uncomfortable about doctors, is looking to have a home birth..... I'm happy to support her given I've had two at home (UK), but does the Spanish system give scope for this with state midwifery or are you driven into a corner involving independent midwives & huge sums of money? AND.... what's it like registering a birth in Spain if you're a Brit and don't have residencia?

:thumbup:Thanks, will forward them.... I'm still hoping, though, that someone on BE may know someone who's gone through the same scenario. Hope beyond hope it seems;)

a few friends have had babies here, apart from the obvious langauge issues they didnt really have any problems with the births or registering them...none were home births though

Thanks, both, it's the home birth scenario that's critical so will look at the links & keep trawling:thumbup:

We have had two here now, one in October just gone and one in 2004. I must admit that I felt very little pain during either birth!!
Seriously though, both births were in the huge Le Fey hospital in Valencia, which has an excellent reputation, but obviously it will be different for home births.
We did however have a few issues. There were no choices given at all, the paperwork was, and continues to be, a nightmare. But the doctors and nurses were excellent, and the hospital was absolutely spotless. We soon discovered that the doctors only do doctoring and the nurses only do nursing, general care is down to family.
Your friend will need someone who speaks very good Spanish to help deal with the paperwork afterwards!

If your friend is a non-resident, how will she be entitled to anything but private medical care?

I know a lady that was covered by the husbands social security but were not resident at the time of birth.

Just waiting for OH to bring ?E106? over to cover her. As an add-on question, does anyone know the limit in Spain for having Downs testing? She's not even happy about having this for fear it'll scoop her into the system, but should at least know.

If her other half is living in the UK, he can get an E109 to cover her while she's in Spain.

My wife gave birth recently, no problems but they're quite strict about how they do it. There's no chance of a home birth on Spanish state healthcare.

I think I got the number wrong, it's to cover someone whose other half is making contributions in another EC country...
What makes you say no chance? Is there actually some law? UK you can give birth where you choose as long as there's a midwife in attendance (emergencies excepted)... doesn't Spain have a similar arrangement? Which province are you - do you think that's regional?

Re: Pregnant & Scared #^#*less of doctors

Well it may be regional. Things tend to be much more medicalised here in Spain, in certain areas, and pregnancy is one of them. We enquired about it and we told no, not even a birth plan, let alone give birth at home.

The form will depend on where the other half lives. If he lives in Spain but makes contributions in the UK, it's an E106, if he lives and works in the UK, it's an E109.

I might be wrong - but I don't think they really do 'midwives' in the sense we mean either

I know a few women who went to a private maternity hospital for that reason
