Depends on the friend, she may just want to get hold of some sterling to travel. Better than going through an exchange place if calculated correctly..for both people:)

A friend in Spain used to always give me a shopping list of things when I went to UK. When I got back she would pay me the equivalent in euro. Always worked to her advantage, never said anything as I would have felt petty saying I was a tenner or so out of pocket.:frown:

so true Jacky, I am grateful to her, she gets to come back to Britain and I get a free holiday, we have arranged it as a regular thing as it's something to do with her house insurance not being valid in the uk if it's empty for a certain period of time. I am really looking forward to it as the temperature here is way below freezing and set to stay that way for a good few weeks. Also she picks me up from Alicante airport and gets me back there for the return flights so if I am out of pocket a bit I still get the best of the deal.

These people are paid silly money in any case, and in the current ecconomic climate it's obscene for them to accept any bonuses, after all the current problems were started by the banks getting greedy and making huge mistakes.

Instead of paying these people ridiculous sums in bonus payments they should instead use those vast sums to pay decent interest on our savings.
It has now come to the point where it's advantageous to keep your money in a home safe rather than in a bank, that way you don't have to declare it for tax.

We are talking about cash.

I think these people will transfer money to a euro account for you in exchange for GBP Whic you will have to deposit first. But doubt they will give you cash.

All these quote you are getting are real time mid market rates .
These are used by professionals to trade with each other with a small spread of probably a point or two ie .0001 or .0002 . They are not for the likes of me or you as they trade in sums of generally 5 to 10 million or more. Bit to much for 2 weeks in Magaluf I think.

I'm getting a better rate than that, but it is a long term investment. :)

As for borrowing...remember granny said....neither a borrower nor a lender be!;):D

Re: Pounds down again.

if you need to change pounds for euros or vice versa, it is good to do a private transaction between a person you trust and yourself.

I have just done the figures between buying and selling 3k pounds, just as an example.
the difference between what you would sell pounds for and buy pounds for is

Selling: GBP 3,000.00
Buying: EUR 3,552.90 Rate: 1.1843

EUR 3,657.20
Buying: GBP 3,000.00
Rate: 0.8203

104,30

If you split it down the middle for both parties each one will have saved/gained 52.15.

Fred the shred has been unknighted.......is there a ceremony that goes with the honour or is it the Sir just never to be used again.

It would be good if there was some sort of reversal ceremony, the Queen giving him a right hook or something....

That would be a novel idea for a website,it could be called "friends unknighted" or something like that.

The unfortunate thing is that he doesn't lose his £650,000 a year pension as well.

Time to change the title, surely, it is the Euro weakening, do you think it will recover, or the greedy PIGS take one last bite of generosity, before declaring themselves, Bankrupt!
Some countries in the EU could be likened to MPs & their expenses. the people who gave out the money where to blame - not sharp eyed, sensible & sufficiently, questioning !
SLOGAN :" Duck ponds & motes, don´t get your votes, only good for Duckies"

Anyone, who has saved his overseas pay to return to Blighty, has seen the cash diminish 20 % (or 20.000 off each 100,000)in 2011. So is there a more stable currency?

y

It seems a race to the bottom - the Bank of England is going to print more money

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/9...0-billion.html

The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee is set to announce on Thursday that it is expanding its Quantitative Easing programme from £275bn to £325bn.
Several members of MPC signalled at their January meeting that they would vote for a further round of QE this month.
Apparently though we are going to be saved by the Chinese - Mr Osborne has made a deal to make London the trading centre for the Chinese currency. I've no idea how that will affect the pound though

You'll find the UK has much more debt than Spain. Maybe you should be more careful about who you call greedy, nevermind who you put into clearly racist acronyms

There is a glimmer of light in the gloom.

However, with only one month of the financial year to go, the government still looks set to beat its borrowing target of £127bn for 2011-12, though not by as much as previously anticipated.

Pound isn't down much, has average 1.19/1.20 for ages. Footsie down though...maybe budget jitters:lol:

where does this "out of the blue" bit come from ? ?

surely this is March, the new fiscal year starts in a couple of weeks (6 Apr IIRC) and the final figures are being balanced

on top of that, all those with budgets are making sure they have at least spent to or over their limit to ensure they get the same amount next year

some of this comes down to the macho idea that the bigger the budget the bigger the manager, it has nothing to do their ability to actually control and rein in a budget - like they expect the public to do
