Possible identity theft
We live in Almeria and recently had an embargo put on to our bank account by the Junta de Andalucia. On investigation, we found that it was for land tax for land purchased in Mijas using my husband's name and NIE number. We have not purchased this land. We are trying to find out when the purchase was made, where the land is and any other details. The big question, is how do we deal with "identity theft" in Spain? In the UK, some credit cards and banks help. Has anyone any useful ideas please???

Re: Possible identity theft
I'm sorry, but it wouldn't make sense for someone to purchase land in Mijas, using your identity in Almeria. It wouldn't be theft, it would be a gift.
There's obviously more to it, and if everything is above board, it may be a matter for the Guardia Civil by way of a denuncia. Maybe before doing that, your own bank should be able to supply you with more details and you could call the Andalucian authorities direct to find out more.
If there is more to it, and the above doesn't work, Spanish private detectives are very efficient, although expensive.

You should make an official complaint to the National Police as its fraud.
Also your bank should as said before be able to help further.
Having said that although the NIE is important, it isn`t really, even petrol stations and shops ask for it.
I always made it up, seemed stupid to hand over id so easily.
Most official depts will ask for proof, simply writing a numbers or copying the document isn`t sufficent, its usually added along with a photo id of some kind.
If somebody has copied your ID and is using photo id as well, such as a passport, you need to get it reported, quickly, before dept builds and you`ll be responsible.
