When I arrived in Spain diesel was 138pts (0.83€) and milk was 70pts (0.42€). Now they are 1.30€ and 0.75€ respectively. In the same period house prices have more than doubled.

They have.....but not in line with prices. Wages are higher than, say, 10 years ago but only by a bit whereas costs have gone up dramatically. Yet this is not to do with the supposed financial crisis we are said to be in now. |
Re: POLL: Are you feeling the pinch in Spain?
Due to the poor exchange rate and having to cash in some investments due to family commitments we are now over 400 euros worse off a month compared to 3 years ago. It would be wrong to say we were finding it hard but we are having to tighten the belt, if we have an unexpected bill or want to go back to UK or anywhere else we now need to take this out of savings. Big expeditor would have to come out of savings as well. We are not robbing Peter to pay Paul but certainly Paul has to wait extra days to get paid.
Like many we took early retirement and our income is fixed any rise in cost of living is not always shown in our present income, my personal pension will not see a rise for 5 years as I took it 11 years early. It was a choice we made and we do not regreet it, everything we have is paid for, our annual total outgoings (not including food or day to living) is 680 euros plus another 800 euros for the car tax, insurance, diesel and up keep, so all in all that's 1,480 euros we know we have to find and the rest is to live on. We know in the short term things will get worse but long term prospects are brighter as we both have our state pensions to look forward to. |

Interest rates on savings invested in the U.K. are 6%+ at the moment this will offset the poor exchange rate a little. Is the euro expensive against other currencies or just the Pound and the Dollar? What would it take to change the situation? |

Not sure what you are asking me to show as an example..... capital can be invested with a U.K. building society off shore at 6.8%. This rate is considerably better than it was a year ago. Not enough to counteract the poor exchange rate...but... every little helps!!! |

What do people feel about the pound rebounding back against the Euro?
I nearly converted a stack of Sterling to Euros when a Euro was 66p :frown: |

I guess so! but to look at getting the very best for what you have, both interest earned and finding the best exchange can't be bad advice.
