Please be aware of the Palm weevil danger!

I am very sad to say the Palm weevil has destroyed my beautiful palm tree - I urge everyone who has palm trees to be aware of the real danger (I only had one and none others in the road but it still came and destroyed) and to treat them and please recognize this pest so you can react.
I did not treat properly and seem to remember seeing the 'pretty' beetle in the garden but was too stupid to recognize and understand the danger. More here

The palm most often affected is the Canary palm. The more common Washintonia palm is not normally affected.

The problem with an infestation is that by the time the palm starts showing symptoms it is too late to do anything about it.

Prevention is the only way, normally now by injecting the insecticide into the trunk. Spraying is possible but difficult to do and you need about 20 litres per palm.

It’s a simple job for a specialist and worth the cost as to replace the palm of any decent size is very expensive as they are very slow growing.

the sad part is that they are not even native to Spain or Europe. The trees, not the bugs.

The red palm weevil is a very damaging pest and has been around in Spain for many years now, our gardeners pour pesticides into the crown of our palms every month and has done for the last 11 years, the weevil lays it eggs in the crown where the soft new growth is, this allows the new grubs to feed on the soft growth and normally kills the tree, pouring the pesticides into the crown is the best way to protect the palm, albeit difficult when the trees are bigger.
We have a red bucket which we put the Pheromone and Kairomone into made by Rhynchonex, in one week we had 112 weevils, this was some 7 years ago, the quantity we get now is much less as the weevil is slowly being controlled by people and local authorities treatment of trees.
Such a small pest can bring these often huge trees to there knee so easily, it's sad to see

I do not know how long they had been in my tree - but it was a big one and keeled over in days.

Good luck everyone and keep up the battle!

Our local Town Hall sent out registered letters to people who had palm trees that were visible from the road. Included was a system of recommended treatment and where to get the chemicals from, this was about 20 years ago. I followed the advice and had a length of hose fixed to the crown of my tree that I pumped the chemicals up through for 15years. However despite this it did not survive. I planted it in 1986 and it was a splendid specimen almost a metre in diameter at the base. Please be aware and warn any of your neighbours who have palm trees.
