Hi where we live the building merchants has only one sand which is a course sand I need a fine sand for plastering so could anyone tell me what the Spanish US and what the proper name of it is please.we live in martos .

Plaster is yeso (hard to work with as it hardens very rapidly) or escayola which is more like normal finishing plaster but a bit coarser.

If you mean sand-and-cement render then you might have to sieve the sand to get rid of any big bits. And use some plastificante to make it smoother and easier to work.

for rendering you need "arena fina" , its the orangy coloured sand, tell then parra morterro (for mortar) this will give you a decent smooth finish. Another option is do a first coat with arena fina and do all the ruling off (similar to a uk "scratch coat", then buy bags of "capa fina" its a ready mixed (dry) render that goes on thinner and is easier to work with and give you more time to sponge up.

Hi ,if you put a scratch coat on then a top coat making sure that you have the right amount of cement in the top coat you should be able to trowel the coarse grey sand to a perfect finish, if you have a good uk style steel trowel .
There is an art to using Yeso but once mastered you can achive a perfect finish with a little effort ,but never use Yeso on any wall that might get damp as it will flake off after a few months.

Escayola isn't for plastering - It's for putting up ceiling boards.

its used for plastering walls as is perlita (softer) and yesso normally ceilings -kitchens and bathrooms (humidity)

the builders merchant just off the industrial estate in martos ,very reasonable prices,ive been constructing a patio and used the sand to render outside walls it was ok

the name I remember now is yesos aranda ,and its on camino castillejo, martos

I brought 100 concrete blocks , half tonne sand and 3 bags of cement and it came to £48 half the price of the uk ,delivered by a site dumper within 2 hrs of odering

Tim that really a goog deal ,I'll will need a few hundred blocks but dawn will need to make sure she does not break any when she loads them up for me,she loves to do little d I y .
