While many people will tell you that plants need to be kept away from pool areas, the result being that most pools are barren and bleak places, there are plenty of heat loving, litter free plants that love this environment and with careful planning they can transform a simple pool into a little oasis. .

I don't know about that Matt but this garden was a building site 4 years ago.
So I guess I have had a 4 year head start! |

Re: Plants in Spain??
Thanks JDR. It looks great in the photos but you should see it after a strong wind - it looks like the Ganges after a Hindu funeral!
Geraniums are pretty flowers but they are not - as Matt succinctly puts it - "litter free"! |

Re: Plants in Spain??
I stick to the Spanish name - BUGANVILLA.
Even I can spell that! |

Re: Plants in Spain??
Thanks Matt - you're a mine of information. Here's a great site www.hotgardens.net and there are some good tips for being water-wise for areas in most southern Spanish provinces where water, mains or wells, can be scarce.
In our area, water can be high in salt and/or calcium carbonate, so guttering and containers to save rainwater are a must, especially for the pots. |

I have that book too and agree with you.
I have two other "bibles". One is a recent book written by one of our neighbours "Mediterranean Garden Plants" by Lorraine Cavanagh. ISBN 84-609-5041-7 and an American book -"The Western Garden Book" by Sunset Publications ISBN 0-376-03875-6. This covers plants common on the west coast of the USA where the climate is very similar to Spain. I have found this book invaluable and you can get it from Amazon UK at a reasonable price. |
