Pet Passport

Getting ready for our Rehearsal as we call it. 5 weeks in main land Spain for a look round and see what the future may hold. But any way to the question.or 2 questions in this case
A dog passport the sort for UK to Spain.
Is it ok to go over to Portugal with our dog. We have a few days from when ferry gets in (Santandar) and getting our apartment (Tarifa) so was thinking why not drive down Portugal. So could we just cross between the 2 Spain and Portugal? Also never been to Portugal is it worth making the detour?
Again does the same apply to Gib can we just take the dog in and out. In the case of Gib this would be on foot?
and yes I know thats sort of 3 questions

At the moment your Pet Passport should be a "European Union" version and is therefore valid for movement between member states. Assuming all jabs are up to date there should be no problem hopping between Spain and Portugal. Do not know about Gibralter as have never tried to take our dog there.
If you have days to spare well worth a leisurely detour to Portugal, route from Santander can take you via Salamanca , excellent pet-friendly hotel , Ibis not far from centre. Then onward to the border bridge via Sevilla is a very good road. Eastern Algarve worth visiting, quite different . Alternatively consider crossing the border from Merida / Badajoz and you can head to Evora and down via Beja.

Hi, you will be OK visiting any EU country provided you have complied with the up to date vaccinations & have the correct paper work to support this.We used to have to sent pets back into UK quarantine before it was made so much easier with the "Pet Passport" scheme. What will happen after Brexit is an unknown.I imagine that little problem will be way down the list so if you intend on remaining in an EU country, get Fido & Moggy over as quickly as poss. It will be an expensive business otherwise.

Yes Pip (The Dog) has a up to date passport. we have took her to Spain a few times. So its just like getting into Spain. If we cross a border they just scan Pip.

I live part time in Spain and go over to Portugal with my dog regularly, she has a Portuguese vet also. NO scan at border, no paperwork check. You can pay your tolls there.

You need the passport for Gibraltar to cross over from Spain. We take our dog and have to show his passport as well as our own.

Whilst the UK remains a member of the EU your dog has the right of free movement in the EU and is the cornerstone of Union rights established by the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992. After BREXIT who knows.
