Default PD Parkinson’s Disease

Did a search and was unable to find anything?
Long term plan was to move to Mallorca in about four years time to retire.I hold both a UK and Irish passport and am 62.
My wife is 52 and is a US citizen.
I felt confident that this plan was viable and should be relatively straight forward.
With little warning I was diagnosed with PD a few weeks ago.The symptoms are mild,in the early stages, and responding to the carbidopa/levodopa medications.
I would be interested and grateful for any input from anyone who may have been in a similar predicament and shed some light on hurdles encountered etc.
Obiously the required private Health Insurance I suspect could be an issue? Medication cost ?
In the US we pay $840/month for our premium and $70/month for the medication,so I hope we are able to reduce those costs somewhat.
Thank you all and I hope i am able to contribute positively in the future.

If your EU spouse is a pensioner

If your EU spouse is a pensioner living in another EU country, you can stay there with them if they have sufficient income to live without needing income support and comprehensive health insurance for the whole family in that country.

You could also get a quote here to see what the costs for private healthcare would be

Yes,and it is a big adjustment moving here from the UK,but I have had excellent service and can not fault it for the most part.I always get to see my GP within 48hrs.
He insists I see him every 3 months for routine blood tests/preventative screening.Im sure that the fact Doctors are billing the Insurance companies plays into that.

But if you change insurance companies, PD will almost certainly be excluded together with any other pre-existing conditions. Depending on the area that could preclude you from obtaining residency

I accept that pre existing conditions may be excluded and that I would be responsible for any costs incurred, but if I was able to get such coverage and then refused residency, that would be a nightmare scenario.

As an EU Citizen you can't be denied residency because of health issues.

Sorry to be a pessimist but I was chatting about this with a Spanish friend who said that it is almost certain that any health insurance company would reject you on this basis.

Hi, will you both speak adequate Spanish when you arrive as planned? Consultations with a Spanish G.P. and specialists, and undergoing tests, would otherwise be daunting.... Many medical staff in Europe speak English, but prefer to communicate in their own language in order to avoid misunderstandings.... If you don't know the language, you might do well to start learning as from now!
(And being able to speak Spanish for the nitty-gritty of daily life would also be an advantage...)

Since the OP is an Irish citizen he's better off speaking to Irish department anyway. If you have made contributions in another EU member state these can be transferred

What about pre-existing conditions, are they covered?

Healthcare is a constitutional right in Spain, so you can’t be excluded from medical care based on pre-existing conditions. However, for major operations, there have been instances where people have been refused emergency treatment because the wait time for complex procedures is usually some months.

To make extra sure your pre-existing conditions will always be treated, it’s best to sign up for supplemental health insurance. Private medical companies vary in whether they choose to treat a pre-existing condition, just like in any country, so it’s a good idea to shop around for the best rates and plan for you.

If you aren’t covered by the state’s healthcare through your job or your residency, you can join the convenio especial. You’ll pay on a monthly basis for public healthcare access, regardless of any pre-existing conditions. The scheme will be managed according to the autonomous region where you’re living.
