Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
My guess is it would be somewhere like La Rioja or Soria. Places in the deep interior with little tradition of tourism. There again, I would have said Galicia a few years ago, but it now seems that (on this board at least) the odd bod has settled there.

Most have partners who are spanish. But from Asturias to the French boarder hardly any Brits and those that are tend to have Spanish partners as you say |

I think the whole North coast is free of Brits. Galicia became popular as property inland is cheaper there so many when to renovate farmhouses like they did in France.

Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
Extremadura (although seen Brit estate agents advertising there). La Mancha? not heard of many there.

If you mean the smallest proportion of brits (do you wish to exclude all other nationalities? or is it just something about brits) then I'd guess the big cities, as there's not much to attract ex-pats to places like that. |

Well, they do have fewest of everybody, so I suppose that's right - but probably not what you were intending. ;)

Not sure about that. Plenty of Brits have asked about buying apartments in Barcelona, although maybe they got scared off by the crazy prices. I remember there was a sizeable number of Brits in Madrid, some were working for IT companies (Sun, IBM), some worked for head offices of international companies, others were teachers of English. Some even set up businesses (generally Irish pubs or other catering outlets though).

Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
Obscure provincial cities maybe - plus Melilla and Ceuta (who'd wanna live there?).

I vote for Euskadi. |
Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
Not one for straying off topic but.......anyone see the programme on tele5 last night (can´t remember the name of it) where they were calling estate agents and were being offered 40+% discount on houses?
Funny saying about Madrid having English here, I´m sure there are lots here but in the 14 months I´ve been here I´ve only come accross one other English person and that was last week. |
Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
There used to be an ex-pat magazine in Madrid Don't know if it's still around but there were lots of British clubs and societies advertised.

I think the part of Spain that has the fewest Brits could be where ever you are if you dont venture out or mix with them (them - not trying to make Brits sound like a species). I´ve only just realised that I never leave the Goya area of Madrid. All I see is wealthy Spanish and generaly elderly ones at that, it´s still fur coat time here and I think they´re all competing again lol. |

Has Castile Leon been mentioned?

Even more cut off now that its been bypassed. I think all the others mentioned have at least a scattering of Brits. |

Probably fairly close with La Rioja and Soria, but I would go with Teruel, where the locals complain that the rest of Spain has either forgotten all about them, or does not even know they exist.

I don't know if it's still going, but on Calle Maldonaldo there's a bar/pub called the Celtic Cross, run by a Scotsman and his Spanish wife. You're quite likely to bump into Brits there, especially when a rugby or football game is being televised. It also gets a lot of Americans too, as it's not too far from their embassy
I hope this one´s not turned into a sushi restaurant as well lol |
Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
There's a bar at the top of Alcala called 'The Sportsman'. Huge gloomy place.

IME of walking, the area around Salamanca/Zamora and heading back East towards Madrid has the fewest Brits, or any other ex-pat population. The north coast is heavily populated with Brits, French, Swiss, German and Dutch second home owners at least as far west as Santander. It's very wealthy area with house prices that compare to London. I've been surprised at just how many Brits are in Galicia, but they're not in the cities - only in rural areas. Very rural! The rural areas that the Spanish gave up long ago. |

Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
At a wild guess, probably not too many Brits in either Ceuta or Melilla.
|
Re: Which part of Spain has fewest Brits?
I lived in Zamora for 6 months in the early 90s, I was the only English-speaking person there (and you can imagine that a twenty something English blonde was quite a revelation for the local guys hehehe!) and pretty much the only foreigner, so I basically got to learn Spanish very fluently as there really was no other choice. I went back a couple of years ago and there were a couple of language schools but still not many "forners".

1) more than an hour's drive from the coasts (except the north, there's hardly any there) 2) outside of the immediate areas of Madrid and Barcelona Course that's just a generalization |
