I'm relocating to Benidorm next month, what is the current employment situation like

How old are you? How well do you speak Spanish? The unemployment in Spain is much higher than in the UK and probably at lot higher if you don't speak the language fluently. My guess would be that there are a lot of British Expats trying to make a living in the same way as you are thinking, and there is only a finite number of jobs. Have you checked the costs involved to be autonomo? as you will have to pay the fees every month whether you are earning or not. More information from you would make it a lot simpler for people on here to give pertinent answers.

I live in Benidorm and can tell you with certainty that jobs are very scarce.

Builders, painters, decorators, cleaners, gardeners are all queuing up for employment. If i needed to I could get a tradesman to do all types of work for less than minimum wage. I socialise with several people who are always asking and looking around for jobs.

Self employment can be very expensive whether you find local work or not and generally any job vacancies are filled by "someone they know"

If I can help you with specific questions about Benidorm please ask but at this present time you may struggle to find suitable employment. If you do decide to live here in Benidorm you aught to brush up on the Spanish regulations and language.

Long term rental accommodation is getting scarce just now as owners are getting their apartments ready for this year's holiday season and can command very high rental rates. Best time to look for rental apartments/villas is November to March. You will need to be here and ready to sign on the dotted line as they get snapped up very quickly.

A one bed apartment in Benidorm is around 350 euro a month plus electric whereas a 3 bed apartment is around 500 euro a month plus bills.

I have a quality painting background and been involved in high end Chelsea and Kensington homes
Also spent 30 years in the fresh produce industry

I wish you well in your endeavour Deek, but do plenty of research into what paperwork and licensing you may need before taking the plunge!!

It's a fantastic place to live here in Benidorm and it's very easy to integrate with the locals wether they are English, German, Spanish or indeed many other nationalities. Benidorm has everything to offer, except maybe employment!

Can't comment on places to stay, but what is your plan? Are you actually retired and just want extra income? That would be a different situation.

Depends how much money you have to live on and how long could you last without work. There are no benefits for you in Spain, or support like you'd get in the UK.

Deek, If you are wanting to live in Spain permanently and legally you will need to sign on the foreigners register after being here for 90 days and obtain an NIE number. You will also need to prove you have healthcare and a regular income which is sufficient to satisfy the authorities that you will not become a burden on the state. After 183 days you will automatically become a tax resident and you will pay taxes to the Spanish tax man.

Please make enquiries on all aspects of requirements needed as you will not get any help from any authorities especially any type of benefits.

Deek, you will need a good amount of money in your pocket before you even start to look for work and even then theres no guarantees. I hope you may get lucky, because thats what it will take. You have nothing to lose (by the looks of it, no offence) in trying BUT how about coming over on the flight and having a bit of a 'fishing expedition' for a few weeks? Get all your unknowns (again, no offence but you have many at the moment) sorted and you will have the picture on what is a big plan for you. Just rocking up at the airport and hoping for the best could be a disaster for you. Come over, plan it out a bit, don't burn any financial bridges in the UK, then decide. Could be better to come in March,(get your EHIC card sorted first) have a look see and return in September when the madness has died down and at least thats the start of fruit picking season when you can earn some casual money if nothing else Mate. You are putting an AWFUL lot of pressure on yourself here, especially given your proposed timings. Holidaying and living here are total poles apart.
