Opening non resident bank account (Barcelona)

Hi,

We've just arrived, so I'm now getting onto the admin stuff.

I'd like to open a bank account which will be used primarily for paying various expenses which appear to require one: rent, utilities, etc. I intend to fund it via (inter-EU) SWIFT transfers (in EUR), so one which doesn't charge a fee for receipt of these funds would be preferable.

We will also need one or two debit cards so we can use ATMs and avoid the foreign ATM charges.

Barclays seems to fit the bill with this account. I note that they don't seem to require an NIE to open the account; just a passport will do.

Should I get the NIE first? Other banks seems to require this even if Barclays doesn't.

One thing they do say they require is proof of address; e.g. a utility bill. But seeing as you cannot actually sign up for utilities (or indeed a rental!) without already having a bank account, I'm a bit puzzled as to how I might do this!

I do have a (somewhat sketchy looking) rental contract for the short term accom we have here, which includes my name and address.

Any other recommendations for banks I should consider? My level of Spanish is probably not yet good enough to conduct the process in Spanish.

We're not sure how long we're going to stay in Spain for, so figure a non-resident account is the best place to start.

Any tips & feedback appreciated.

can't comment on that particular account - but pretty much all the banks will open a non-resident account with just a passport & some money :D

Have to agree it's easy in some places, you just need a passport, However it may be different in another bank with different staff. shop around.
