opening a cattery
 

Hi guys

We are looking to move to Spain this year in a property with a little bit of land and we would like to open a cattery if possible. We are looking at the Costa Blanca area, specifically the Pilar de la Horadada/Torrevieja kind of area. Does anyone know what sort of licenses and regulations we would need to have/meet to do this please? There doesn't appear to be anything on Google. I have qualifications in cattery management and cat and kitten first aid. We aren't bothered about kennels, just a cattery, nothing huge, 20 cats maybe, just as a supplementary income really.

I know someone who set up a cattery and that is what they had to provide.

Regulations almost certainly differ from place to place, so the only person that can give you a definitive answer will be in the local town hall. I suggest you talk to them first.

My family came to Spain before they joined the EU which will probably be the same sort of regulations as we had to meet, after Brexit,just the countries in reverse situation.We had Kennels,Cattery ,aviaries,pets cemetary & import & export of pets worldwide.I am a registered breeder with both the British & Spanish Kennel Clubs & a breeder with the Parrot Society.It makes no difference what your credentials are in animal welfare but there are very strict guidelines in animal management & business practices despite what you may hear from people who imagine "anything goes" in Spain.Fred is correct in directing you to your local townhall but also you should perhaps consult the Ministry of Ag.as well.Our licence was "a home for animals" as I believe at one time horses & mules were bred on our premises as well as being owned by a Spanish man who was also a registered dog breeder & exhibitor.

As others have said, nothing is easy in Spain and every area will have different regulations. Town hall would be your first contact but they often don't know everything either and one misunderstanding can cost you your business, so best use a good lawyer too. Just to build a crappy wall you need an architect/license.

There will be a million rules and regulations and lots of hoops to jump through and probably alot of fees to pay to all sorts of people just for a stamp on a piece of paper.
