Hi. i'm moving from plymouth, england, to near Alicante spain at the end of august.

Were trying to get shot of our UK RHD car and get a LHD car, although i'm quite shocked as to how few LHD cars for sale there seems to be (or not to be) in England and they are so expensive, in fact in some cases DOUBLE the price of the equivalent RHD car.

Any ideas?

We had an idea to rent a car in the uk, drive over to spain and drop it off there. Does anyone know what company (if any) does that? e.g. one way car hire.

...or is anyone coming back from spain with their car, to move back to the uk and want to get shot of their car? (ADMIN PLEASE THAT IS NOT AN ADVERT, ITS A QUESTION!)

I would welcome any ideas or suggestions.

I moved to Spain in Jan 09, having purchased a LHD car in UK (in Jun 08, wanting to have owned it for 6 months before move). Traded in my two RHD cars. Had excellent service from Kilrush Cars based in Guildford (sure mods will delete if not supposed to make recommendations?). A web based LHD car specialist at www.kilrushcars.com. I agree prices for LHD in UK seem strangely more expensive, but with Kilrush Cars I got a good deal and a good car.

nice one, ill check that out, but youre right, i would edit your posting, it does look like an advert (and you and i know it isnt) but they will probably cut it.

If anyone else would be kind to reply, very much appreciated, but prob best to private msg me if you want to recommend a garage or company, but advise on the forum is fine

Hi, we are moving to Javea in July and we are using a one-way hire firm based in Kent with sister depots in Alicante and Javea. They have a variety of vechicles from 7.5 tonne vans to standard transit vans. I heard that driving your stuff to spain in a self drive van was a nightmare and you had to list absolutely everything in the van in minute detail for customs. ?? Dunno if thats true? What have they (the hire company) said about it?

We wanted to buy a LH drive but also found them very expensive. You can buy new or nearly new in the UK with VAT deferred to country of destination under the New Means of Transport Regulations.

The cheapest option was to look at German cars, and take them down direct to Spain.

German dealers are doing some incredible deals at the moment (Even better in Poland I believe where many of the Germans are taking their scrappage deals).

Others will advise you on the difficulties of importing into Spain.

well, the ideal situation would be to buy a new car, LHHD, ordered from a UK main dealer, on HP finance payments and then take it to spain, and eventually re-register it but carry on making the payments, that sort of thing as we dont want to spend all of our savings just to get a car, but as far as i know i have never heard of anyone doing this> I guess if someone didnt keep up the payments, it would difficult for them to recover the car? Seems daft really as we all supposed to be in Europe?!

Anyone heard of anyone doing the above or is it impossible?

I would imagine as you are not the owner of a car on finance and moving it to another country without telling the owners could be stealing or fraud, so check it out first.

I wish someone would all of a sudden email me out of the blue and say they live in the south west of the uk and have a good, clean and cheap spanish car they can sell me!!!!!!

Should add you have to be careful what you purchase as the fines go with the car so you may end up paying for something you did not want!

thanks for that, yes there is one one there that we are interested in, the SEAT ibiza. Spoke to the chap, seems all in order, and he says the taxes have been paid etc, but of course i need to find out how to double check there are no debts against the car, as you said.

any ideas?
