Default One night in Madrid.

Stopping off in Madrid for 1 night in April, wife and 3 teenage boys.

Anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced hotel centre of town? Stayed there twice before, both expensive and miserable.
What is it with the Spanish and glass bathroom doors? Last thing I want to see is my missus on the throne!!!!!!

Do you actually want a hotel, or would you be happy in a hostal? In case you don't know, that's not a hostel! More of a small hotel or sometimes a B&B.

I've stayed in both Hostal Luis XV and Hostal Jerez, both in Calle Montera right by Gran Via metro station, so very central. They're on the 6th and 8th floors of the same building (there is a lift). Hostal Luis XV has been refurbished recently and has perfectly acceptable en-suite rooms. Clean, reasonably priced and no glass bathroom doors!!!

One ward of warning - Calle Montera is (one of?) the main roads for prostitutes - however, I've stayed in the street 5 times now and have never felt anything but perfectly safe. It just depends if you mind seeing scantily clad girls plying their trade at all times of the day and night by every shop doorway!

A Google search on either Hostal should bring up a booking website to reserve through.

Enjoy your night, wherever you end up.

Try Hostal Cervantes on Calle Cervantes, 34. Very quiet at night, yet it's very close to major tourist areas like the Prado, Cibeles, and not too far from Sol either. The room I stayed in was traditional, with opaque door to the bathroom. Free internet and quite good prices too: (from 40 per night)

hostal cervantes

Another good place is Hostal Persal, but expect to pay 15-20 more Euros per night.
