Sound familiar, Atlanta 1996.

The artistic success of the opening ceremonies gave way to problems the next day when the athletic competitions began. Members of the international press corps experienced transportation problems getting to venues near downtown from their housing in scattered locations throughout the metropolitan area. Many journalists were late or missed events as some buses broke down and a few drivers became lost. There were also delays in reporting the results of athletic events as a state-of-the-art computer system failed to deliver data from the various competition sites. This caused missed deadlines and added to the frustration of journalists from all over the world. Their reports on the games were critical of local organizers and the city itself.

It tells me that London is a very dangerous place to be. They can't even hold a sporting event without having to call in the army

Barcelona, 1992, (and the world has become a much more dangerous place since then)

se gastaron 400 millones en seguridad, contratando 30.000 soldados aparte de otros efectivos civiles.

And Spain has tens of thousands more police than the UK in spite of a much smaller population. C'man must think Spain is very dangerous.

Its the message it sends out I dont like. When I lived in London I hated that there were policeman with machine guns patrolling around. I dont want to live in a place where I need to be guarded for my own security

Ditto at the British airports. Part of the reason why I try and avoid London nowadays.

I was only 11 for the Barcelona Olympics, I know almost nothing about them, other than they are cited as the most succesful Olympics of modern times

I have no wish to get into a Uk/Spain debate, however I see far more armed police in Spain than I ever do in London.
You really should emigrate to somewhere safer. Sark?

There is quite a difference in seeing a policeman with a pistol in a holster and seeing another one patrolling the streets with a sub-machine gun

The latter is usually only reserved for war zones, Central London and British airports

In that case may I suggest you try living on another planet.

Oh, sorry I forgot, apparently you already do.

Well basically they both do the same job and either one can shoot you dead at the drop of a hat.

Maybe if the machine gun guys cover their weapons with a raincoat it would meet your approval.

He's certainly in a world of his own! Apart from airports in UK, where I live I've never seen a cop with a gun, bit different in Spain where even the doddering old local police are all tooled up.

Likewise, I've only ever seen one in an airport in the UK.

When I first went to Spain I thought I'd landed in Dodge City by mistake.

Well you obviously didnt work in Central London for 5 years like I did

Policeman carry pistols in almost every country in the world. I'd rather they didnt, but if it means policeman become as arrogant and unfriendly as the British police force then maybe they should

We had seats outside the Palace for the Jubilee parade. Had to go in early and I have never seen so many Policemen in one area. They were great and were shouting good morning, some a bit of banter...a good atmosphere. I have always found them pleasant and helpful.

There are always lots of armed Police at heathrow but I feel reassured by that.

The first place I ever remember seeing police with machine guns was in Bilbao in the 90's and given where I was born and raised that quite an achievement!

Thge armed police in Central London was during the worst of the IRA problems, and, I think, just after the 7/7 bombings, they are not there routinly now.
