Bad business in Tornado Alley.
91 killed incl. 20 children.

Amazing footage on Sky of a camera crew interviewing an old lady who had managed to escape from the rubble but believed her dog had been lost, when suddenly one of the crew spots some movement and with a little assistance the shell shocked Mutt is brought out alive.

Think I'll be crossing Oklahoma of my places to spend time, in between my future Spanish non resident visits.

why does man insist on building encampments in areas of high risk, be it from earthquakes, tornadoes or volcanoes

I suppose someone has got to live there.
Seems most of the houses were of mainly timber construction, even some with corrugated tin roofs.
Doesn't seem such a bright idea in Tornado Alley.

Now if they'd built them like the old Spanish houses with solid stone walls about a meter thick they may have stood a slightly better chance of survival.

isn't that how they do it in Japan, flimsy materials theoretically cause less damage to the human body.

however just listening to some of the live reports talking about debris all over the place........

most of the old Spanish houses I have visited have no foundations so such a hit would probably move them. Many new Spanish houses have large undercroft build, generally as a garage/store which may be of use as a shelter.

There was a tiny by comparison tornado in the Algarve last november it caused a few million Euros of damage and sadly there was one fatality.
Such events on the Atlantic coast are not that rare

I think just about anything that is hurtling through the air at 300 mph is gonna cause someone some serious damage.

Though looking at some of the rocks built into the old Spanish houses I fancy it would take much more than that to get them airbourne.

It seems that the causes are similar to those that result in the Gota Fria though fortunately it does not occur on anything like the same scale.

The UK has them as well but they are generally small and less frequent than those that are generated on the Western side of the Atlantic

And Typhoons aren't any fun either, having been hit by one at sea in the Northern "Pacific".:eek:

having seen a 20+ ton generator screwed down onto the deck and taken by a series of waves without even scraping the paintwork I hold a healthy respect to what wind and sea can do

Number killed now reported as 24 incl. 7 children rather than the 91 incl 20 children as first reported.
Somebody got their sums badly wrong.
Looking at the scenes of devastation, surprising it isn't more.
