Odd flying insect
I'm sure that you will know what this is straight away. I noticed an odd lump of what I assume and hope was mud in the corner off one of outside walls with holes through it. Clearly a nest of some sorts. When I went to remove it it was solid like brick and inside were two strange insects which flew off. They were like they were in two sections vertically. What are they and are they nasty? Do they sting or bite?

Re: Odd flying insect
Maybe waspys ??
|
Re: Odd flying insect
Wasps.
Spray the nest with insecticide and run away very fast. |
Re: Odd flying insect
Didn't look like any kind of wasp I know of. Are they a strange Spanish wasp?
About 2 - 3 cms long vertically and in 2 distinct sections. |
Re: Odd flying insect
Alas I've never been that close.
However they build a nest for their grubs, in corners etc. looks a tad like a mini mud hut! good luck :) PS Mosi spray appears to kill so many beasties ... not tried it on waspys as yet ... but think it will work!! |
Re: Odd flying insect
Well it's gone now but I shall be wary should they come back. In fact I felt a bit guilty after I had removed the nest as one of the creatures came back looking for it. A quick squirt of repellent sent it packing.

Re: Odd flying insect
I think it was a thread-waisted wasp.
They'll nest anywhere, even indoors. 'They' say that they don't sting unless you tread on them or something like that but to me a wasp is a wasp and I run away. |
Re: Odd flying insect
That sounds right as I found one had built a nest on my curtains! But when I removed that one there was just a larvae inside.
|
Re: Odd flying insect
They tend to build a nest in or under the roof tiles, when we put a new roof on our house there were lots of the nests there!
|
Re: Odd flying insect
A mason-wasp. They look like they are in two sections when they fly with their legs hanging down below them in an untidy looking way. They lay an egg in live but paralysed prey - spiders usually - and seal them up in the mud nest. Also know as 'mud-dauber'.

Re: Odd flying insect
The ones I have seen look like the Potter wasp, is this like it. mine were not like the mason wasp.

I didn't realise how big the pic was ............ they give me the creeps I have to admit - I hate it when they fly into the house |
Re: Odd flying insect
But I still need to know if they are nasty or not. No doubt they will come back and I just wonder if maybe next time I should be a little less gung-ho in getting rid!

When in doubt, get out your spray and blow them all away. ;) |
Re: Odd flying insect
If you have identified it as any if the ones mentioned then a quick google should tell you the answer. Me I just kill them, one nasty bite a year is all the bugs get and that was one too many !

Re: Odd flying insect
It is one of those skinny wasps nests. They lay a lavee in it which in time becomes a skinny wasp

Re: Odd flying insect
Those Mud Wasps used to hang around my cement mixer nicking cement for their nests. They never bothered me too much and I grew quite fond of them. I always hoped they didn't seal themselves into their nests for the night with what they thought was mud. :(

They are "solitary wasps", as opposed to social wasps who live in groups. They do sting but very rarely, only if attacked, they are non-aggressive. Hornets are a kind of social wasp. Social wasps are more aggressive than solitary wasps and can sting multiple times. |
Re: Odd flying insect
We found this year that the wasps that look like our wasps are a lot more docile then they are in the UK - you can actually bat them away without getting stung - am i being stupid if i ask do they actually sting xxxxx

No, not stupid, and yes, they do! Wasps have stings to paralyse their prey. If you are unlucky, they will use it on you!

Maybe its the heat that makes them less highly strung in Spain then as there were quite a lot but they just didnt bother us - now here in the UK they are just pure evil - they hunt their victims down mercelessly ;) - thank you xxxxx
But the mozzies make up for it ... :sneaky: |
