Now we are going to lose BBC sounds
The BBC has announced the BBC sounds app is going to be restricted to UK listeners only from Spring 2025 -

:( ...and just as I was about to invest in a radio with bluetooth capability specifically so I could hear it properly rather than listening to the tinny output from my mobile.

Re: Now we are going to lose BBC sounds
Do you think that the BBC podcasts (Moral Maze, In Our Time etc.) will still be available?
|
Re: Now we are going to lose BBC sounds
I wonder why the BBC have decided to block it now? They are not explaining the reasons for their actions.

I'd recommend a Roberts, or Majority. Available on Amazon.es. Strangely the Roberts radios on Amazon.es are a lot more money than in the UK. |
Re: Now we are going to lose BBC sounds
They have explained that the costs are paid for by the UK licence payer and so you need to be UK based.
They are offering a new app, BBC World news and stories, but that will have limited offerings in comparison to BBC sounds. |

I listen to those programmes with no problem on our internet radio. You can get any station in the world. All you need is wifi.

Would the device you're using as a receiver be material? If the content you're listening to is on BBC Sounds, and that's being geo-blocked, is an internet radio going to get round that?
I don't know very much about these things though. We've had two for years. They simply work off your home wifi. We've never bothered with a satellite dish in northern Spain for British TV. Nor a VPN come to that. Otherwise all we'd do would be to watch TV somewhere! We've got better things to do. Sometimes in the middle of the night if either of us cannot sleep, we tune in to Radio 4 or something. With headphones. In fact I was listening to the Moral Maze last night. |

An internet radio has nothing to do with geo-blocking, or VPN's. It's a radio, pure & simple.

So the home wifi with no VPN doesn't reveal your location and allow a site to block you from accessing their content?
So without VPN we couldn't access British TV, but simply via wifi the radio picks up any station worldwide. Legally!! Don't ask me how it works. Internet radios have been out years. |

I listen to Voice of Barbados as well as the hospital radio station my cousin has a slot on in the Uk. Neither require a VPN. The BBC has decided to use the same system that they use for TV signal and check the IP address of any listener and block it. Another reason to get rid of the stupid licence and just take advertising revenue. |
Re: Now we are going to lose BBC sounds
I wrote to the BBC many years ago saying I'd be happy to pay a contribution to the licence fee. They replied with a typical neutral statement.
They've certainly gone downhill as far as I can make out. War correspondents such as Jeremy Bowen or Orla Guerin are so anti Israel that I've given up with them. |
