Default NIE and certificado de residencia in Madrid

Hi,
I arrived to Madrid 3 weeks ago, and am looking for a job now (I am a UK citizen). I am planning to stay here until June. As far as I understand, I need a NIE and a certificate of residence. I have been reading a lot on various websites, but the information varies and I am not sure what I should start with. Besides, I heard that now it takes several months to get an appointment for NIE, so I dont know if it's going to be worth it to get NIE just before I leave.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Oksana.

When you apply for your residencia, if you don't already have an NIE, you will be given one - so it's just one application.

Some people have been able to get the residencia in just an hour (myself for one) but others have had to queue and then come back weeks later.

Maybe someone from Madrid can give more local knowledge.

So only a month to wait to change the address, unbelievable apart from in Spain.

It is a requirement by law, but I don`t know of anyone being deported for it though.

seriously, don't worry about it!!

while not condoning rule-breaking, I know people who have been here for years who have never signed on the resident list

they are here legally - they have the right to live here

the list is so that the powers that be know who is here

the NIE is for financial purposes - it's only in the past few years that the rules changed & you get both at the same time if you come to live here

you can have a NIE if you don't live here
