Newbies

Just thought I would introduce us, me Graham the boss Rosemary. We moved to Corbera, 30 Kms south of Valencia last year. My work was shipped off to India so we decided to take early retirement. After the last fifteen years spent in the middle of an estate in Eastbourne, waking up each morning looking up at our view of the castle is rather refreshing to say the least.
Rosemary is into crafts I seem to be into renovating two bathrooms like it or not.
Are the Spaniards always so friendly? We were lucky if we had a grudging "morning" from our neighbours in Eastbourne here it's bon dia from virtually everyone that passes. Our ration of oranges arrive once or twice a week and then yesterday a neighbour arrived with armsful of kale. I know everyone says give it two years then decide but so far it is looking good.
regards

HI Graham

Nice to type you , nice that its all going well ,but tell me what if anything are you missing in your life out there ?

oh and what is kale ?

Rosemary Mar 4th 2007 7:56 am

Re: Newbies

Big Pete,
What is kale? It is a brassica, delicious if you like cabbage type greens but the armful that we were given boiled to a few tablespoonsful.
What do we miss? Rosemary,(the Boss), says lemon meringue pie, clotted cream, She is from Devon. Family and friends obviously. Chatting, our Spanish is not up to this level yet and we are the only English living here. We did not watch much tv in England so that is not a problem. Ten minutes on this reply so far and we are struggling. We cannot think of anything else that is important, we have been here seven months and so far appears to be one of the best decisions we have made.
Today in our little town of 3077 inhabitants we have watched a parade in full fallas regalia, the road blocked for dancing, bangers and fireworks at least 10/12 times including I might add during dinner. Compare this to the silence we lived in back in England and this is why we are so happy here. I am now a regular pain in the rear end to people back in England, they must be sick and tired of hearing about the day to day life in Corbera.
Electrical engineering was my background until it moved to India. Do I miss it NO.

Craft holidays? Would that be similar to the cooking and painting holidays that have been set up in France? If so I think it may well work especially during the cooler months.

Re: Newbies

Jandy I wish I could chuck it all in and do what you are doing... I really wish you luck. Soometimes I think the more assets one has the harder it is to take a risk, for fear of losing it all. I still remember my carefree penniless days in London, cycling everywhere, blagging everywhere. Glad I have a house in Spain to return the favours of the friends who were friends.
Watching this weeks episode of Desperate Housewives on E4.. repeated next week on Channel 4, Weds. I know it's a bit of American nonsense, but there are nuggets of truth in between the convoluted storylines. We all fear change, but one has to use it to one's advantage, as there comes a time when everything has ended and no more change is possible.
Graham I think the Spanish really celebrate life in a way people in Britain have forgotten, and of course they have the long hot summers which help. They are already getting excited about the ferias, Semana Santa etc etc
The numerous Bank Holidays, the zest for living, not always having to be fuelled by copious amounts of alcohol.
Here in London they have cancelled all the outdoor concerts at Kenwood because of complaints by local residents about the noise. At Garsington, a country house opera festival, they also have complaints from the locals.
And go for the craft workshops...I think you may find others are doing them as well. A friend is running flamenco orientated holidays to Seville and Jerez in small groups, and she is also expanding to cover the major festivals.

Hi,
I have done to some, always check facts before you go out and make sure you really trust someone before you go ahead with anything.

My experience of going out was based on what we were told by friends and what actually happened was not the same.

Ours was also lack of planning even though it was 3 years worth but things happened that we did not foresee.

In some ways i am glad as we have learnt valuable lessons but also a part of me was gutted.
It is all fate and it was not our turn this time and maybe next time it will be.
xxxxxx

Hi thanks for you reply,I dont watch desperate housewives,I think life is to short to get bogged down with materilistic things, you have only one go on this planet as we know it,and sometimes its better to take risks,I think a favorite quote of mine is ( if you dont change it, things stay the same )and if your not happy with your lot move on.I lost some one very close to me five years ago and that has changed my veiws on life, I think you just have to work with what youv got,Im looking foward to moving to Spain,Im not expecting everything to be a bed of roses, but at the end of the day we just have to take that chance. Its not me who is going to be doing craft workshops. You are right the more you have the less chance your likely to risk it,but if your happy with what you have why change it .At the end of the day we are bogged down in a rat race,no quality time ect.Anyway we will see how the next few months pan out
