Do the Spanish have this concept. And if so, what do they call it?

Never heard of it here. They have deseos (wishes), one for each grape eaten when the New Year chimes in.

The "hombre de tradiciones" suggests it's nothing new, I've certainly heard of it, although how long it's been around I've no idea.

Yes, I asked my friends last night, they've heard of it but none of them do it ... They don't give things up for Lent either, another bizarre custom!
