Literally yesterday I battled through the INSS system to submit my S1 online - for anybody interested (geeks) in was a nightmare because it needed Java to work - then THIS morning this was on Facebook -
UPDATE FOR S1 HOLDERS WHO ARE TRYING TO REGISTER WITH THE INSS ONLINE
The INSS have updated their online process for registering the S1 form. You can now visit Solicitud y trámites de la seguridad social - Registro del documento S-1 para cobertura de asistencia sanitaria en España de asegurados en un Estado europeo: https://tramites.seg-social.es/.../registro-s-1-cobertura... to register your S1 form online. Alternatively, you can request an appointment in person by contacting your nearest office:
https://www.seg-social.es/.../inte.../OficinaSeguridadSocial
Please note that you need your residency certificate or TIE in order to register your S1 with the INSS. If you have recently completed your residency application you need to have received confirmation that it has been approved – resolución favorable – in order to register your S1 with the INSS. At present, the online registration process is in Spanish.
I have had a quick look and hopefully this is much easier than the old (yesterdays!) system.
Anyway good to know they are trying to make things easier and more streamlined...
Not that UK systems are any better - having applied for my S1 online and it failing to arrive I phoned them and it arrived within a week.

I wonder if it is any easier now to get an appointment to register one at an INSS office? I won't need to until next year, but when I turn 66 and start receiving my state pension I'll need to get a new S1 in my own right and register that (have had one as my husband's dependant for the past 6 years). I don't know if the online system would provide for that situation so I'd rather attend the office in person and explain, if possible.

Given the time of year, I decided to try the online option and if that failed try for an appointment - after a very frustrating morning I made it finally work.
Mine is also a tad complicated because I have had a SIPS card for years courtesy of the longevity of my residencia but now having reached 66 I have obtained my S1 and so the UK will contribute for my cover to Spain and my prescription charges will reduce.
When your turn comes maybe appointments will be easier and the best option. Good luck.
