What? Why on Earth shouldn't they be built in the UK?

Because the factories are in Spain! It would be like Spain ordering a UK built military vehicle and then us asking why is it not built in Spain? If on the other hand you are asking why is there nothing considered suitable for the military which is built in the UK, then that is another question.

Bottom line is, the troops deserve the best equipment possible, if that means procuring it from abroad then so be it.

Much as I think the Brits can be corrupt as anyone else, I really can't see the British Army purchasing dept accepting bribes from suppliers!

Well yes, this is what surprises me. We've had a strong military (and associated industry) for donkeys' years.

UK Defence equipment manufacturers are simply too expensive, equally good (and often better) equipment can be obtained elsewhere. It is not the place of the MOD to order UK manufactured goods simply to keep people in jobs. Quote from General Richards (new CDS to be) in todays papers would seem to sum it up:

General Richards said: ‘I would love to see a very prosperous British defence sector but I don’t think it’s the job of the military to prop up ailing industries.

If British industry can deliver that, then fine. But if they’re too expensive versus the competition then I don’t think it’s our job to spend money simply to keep those industries alive.

‘Ultimately, it’s why Margaret Thatcher did what she did in the Eighties. You can love her or hate her, but she transformed the British economy at a time when it was going down the tube.

'We’ve got to be similarly robust in our approach to the British defence sector... There may be certain things we must keep – shipyards are one example. But tanks, vehicles, these can be produced very cheaply under mass production.’

If you take that statement to it's extreme then there will be no one paying tax to support the military who then will not exist.

What happens if we go to war with the Countries supplying our equipment?
Defence spending is not just a case of buying the cheapest.

So we are saying that British Defence industry should not be selling abroad to the likes of Saudi Arabia, Dubai, etc they should all just buy from their own country?

Of course Defence spending is not just a case of buying the cheapest, it is getting VFM for the best, most suitable equipment for our troops, delivered on time and to spec, if that means going outside of the UK, then so be it.

I suspect if we go to war with the Countries supplying our equipment, that will be the end of NATO and the EU and we are all in a deep pile of sh*t.

Well, yes that is one of the jobs of the MOD actually. Which is why heavy equipment procurement deals almost always involve manufacture or assembly in the UK. Like this deal in fact. The vehicles (apart from the handsful of prototypes) are not being manufactured in Asturias, but in South Wales.

There have been a few more too, like boots, tanks and rifles issued for general use and not up to the job. An then there are some great successes too.
