Need to carry passport?
Hola.
Somewhere I have read that every British ex-pat now needs to carry full identity with them at all times - and that it should be your passport. However, in discussion with a friend who lives next door to a Guardia Civil officer, they were advised to take a photo of their passport on their phone as that will suffice as identity.
I have my doubts as to the authenticity of this method, any thoughts please

Re: Need to carry passport?
1) Are Spanish citizens required to carry ID at all times?
2) Are UK nationals who are residents required to carry ID at all times?
3) Are other nationalities who are non-residents required to carry ID at all times?
4) Are other nationalities who are residents required to carry ID at all times?
5) Are tourists from any country required to carry ID at all times?
Did I miss anyone/any class of person out?
In any case, I carry my driving licence around with me but I'm not inclined at all to be carrying my passport as well.

It will be easier with a TIE as it comes as a card (so I understand) Some people carry around a certified photocopy of their passport I have a photocopy of my passport and residencia (which in all honesty is not proof of ID) and my Spanish driving license.

However, for some matters, a copy, a Spanish d/l or even a Spanish credit card sometimes suffice.

You are required to have photographic proof of ID but nowhere does it stipulate that has to be a passport and any EU format driving licence should suffice.
I'm currently waiting for a Spanish licence to turn up and as I categorically refuse to carry my passport with me I have a copy of it plus an officially stamped copy of my old driving licence which bears my likeness and if they are not convincing enough then I'm perfectly prepared to suffer any consequences.

I have never been asked by Guardia and only once been asked by Police Local for ID. I was recovering my wife's handbag. They accepted a reduced size plasticised photocopy.
When asked for ID by notary, I produced my original passport.

I was told by a Guardia Civil that a Spanish driving license for a UK national is fine for ID. It's always been accepted as an equivalent to the Spanish DNI for day to day use.
My only problem was in a B&B in la Rioja. For some reason in that region a passport number is required to register in a hotel etc.

I had a laminated copy of my passport, the ID pages, and carried that at all times with my DL. the only time I was asked for my actual passport was when trying to do bank business.

The following can be used, but as the UK was/is just in the EU and they don't issue ID cards Brits have to use a passport.
D.N.I
Pasaporte.
Permisos de conducir
Permiso de Residencia Español
Permiso de Residencia de otro estado de UE

In courts, only a passport for us Brits will be accepted.
I have been a witness and my wife is a court translator - every time we need to take our passports. Spanish driving licences are NOT allowed by the various judges

Re: Need to carry passport?
I once went to the Comisaria de Policia Nacional to report a break-in and produced a reduced size plasticised photocopy of my passport when asked for ID at the door to gain entry. I got a stern telling off from the officer on duty who told me I must carry my passport at all times, although he did relent and let me in on that occasion. I don't have a driving licence of any kind so I do now carry my passport as ID. I will be very pleased to eventually get a TIE with photo once the system is in place for us to apply for them.

Re: Need to carry passport?
I was stopped by Trafico in a radar trap and had absolutely no ID - it was a test drive and I had left all my usual (copies) in my car at the dealer. I am registered as a user of the Guardia Civil "AlertCops" app on my phone. I just showed them my profile page in the app and they were happy - it didn't stop them giving me a fine.

Hi Dave
Sorry to hijack your post. Thinking of moving to Spain before the deadline and have identified Chiclana and Bahia de Cadiz area as a potential.
Any info or websites you can point us to?
Thanks
