We almost always fly from Faro occasionally Sevilla and our passports have always been scanned electronically when departing. I think it is to check for outstanding warrants or fines! That check will also be used for overstaying since you are also electronically checked on arrival.

Only if you have entered and left Schengen through one country, in this case Portugal. There is currently no Schengen-wide entry/exit database, so there is no way of ascertaining electronically that someone who entered in Italy and left Schengen in Portugal has overstayed - only by checking the entry and exit stamps, but passports aren't stamped for UK citizens until the end of transition period. This will hopefully be put right when ETIAS comes on stream.

ETIAS Is due on stream in 2021 and passport stamping starts in 8 days so not long to wait for complaints.
Another consideration is the No of pages in the passport. In the old days “business” people used get a 50 page one to allow for lots of journeys. These days we all travel much more and a normal passport will soon fill up. Another money spinner for the home office!

Well, right now I think most of us don't.... Will we get back into it? I'm not sure we will.

Well it is certainly what airlines and Governments are hoping for and working hard to facilitate. Look at the desperate efforts to commit London Heathrow’s third runway before it is overtaken by events!

Good news. Gibraltar have negotiated movement for their citizens only yesterday. So, it is possible for one independant state to negotiate with another, Spain, for free reciprocal movement between each others borders.

Yes they can, but any treaty/arrangement is subject to approval by EU, which regulates Schengen agreement. On Gibraltar, one assumes that EU will be happy with an arrangement that works for both Spain and Gibraltar (which isn't a state but British overseas territory). Gibraltar participates in the discussion as part of the British delegation, which retains responsibility for Gibraltar's defence and foreign policy among other things.

Gibraltar have agreed to become part of the Schengen Area. The UK did not join when they had the chance. I can’t see them doing it now, even if they were offered the chance.

Indeed. So Gibraltar's airport and seaport will become Schengen external border, but patrolled by Frontex, EU's border agency, instead of Spanish officials. There will be no border checks at the land border between Gibraltar and Spain.

Pipe dream!
Nothing has been agreed or signed. Tabloid press just printing usual junk.
There are only 3 days left to agree some kind of GIB-ES deal, but unlikely to happen.
Deal would need to be approved by UK gov, which cant stand ES and GIB, which consider as traitors for voting to remain.

There will always be border checks at La Linea!!!
Even if by some miracle GIB enters Schengen, GIB will not be in Common market, therefore full custom checks will be in place.
GIB is tax heaven and cigs smuggling is big business over there.

Personally, I sincerely hope that there will be some kind of deal between GIB-ES, but dont have much hope.
