hi to all, oh what a day... I am leaving Spain and going back to UK to live, well, I found a puppy last year and had him microchipped, vaccinated and had his rabies injection, got his pet passport and thought thats all too it, took him back 2 weeks ago to vet for his follow up rabies injection and told her i am taking him back to uk in middle of december, she said "you havent had his blood taken at all !!!!!!! blimey , yep I know I should have found out all about this but i honestly thought i was doing everything properly, soooo upset, have rang deera who said he will have to go in 6 month quarantine in uk, oh poor ol reg, (thats his name)cant stand the thought of him in there, have seen some programmes on tv about it and some quarantine centres are sooooo awful, but cannot do anything else about it, this is just a warning to anybody else, check that your dog has a pet passport and it is all correct, you never know when or if you are going back to UK and you dont want to be in the same position as me.
The quaranting centre are charging me £2000 to keep him,its not the money but the thought of him in there.........

Have you thought about getting his blood test done and then popping him into a private kennels here in Spain for 6 months, then coming to collect him in 6 months time. My local kennel charges 5 euros per night + food, by my calculations that a lot cheaper than £2000!!

Oh Pat,

I'm so sorry that things have not worked out well for you and Reggie :(
I seem to recall that you've had a pretty tough time this year; so I'm sure this is the last thing you need to be dealing with.

Assuming there is no way you can delay your return to the UK, then it does seem that you've only got 3 options:

Find Reggie a new home in Spain (which it sounds like you wouldn't want to contemplate)

Pay the extortionate quarantine fees

Or do as aspeangel suggests and leave Reggie in kennels here.

Obviously, none of the above are ideal solutions.
I know you say the money isn't the main problem; it's the thought of Reggie being in quarantine - and I can only begin to imagine how hard that will be for the two of you :(
Although the Spanish kennels will cost you less, of course you won't be able to visit Reggie as often as you might be able to in the UK. (I have no idea whether you are allowed to visit dogs in quarantine, or whether the quarantine centre is near where you will be moving to??)
Is it a quarantine centre that you've chosen, or been recommended?

Here's something for you to ponder, and hopefully help you to feel a bit more positive:

Although an awful lot of us humans regard our dogs as almost human, they are still dogs - and they don't have the same feelings and emotions as we do (even though it's very easy to forget that, when we're suffering feelings of loss or separation from them)
Therefore, it's us who suffer more emotionally!

I'm not suggesting for one minute that Reggie won't miss you or wonder what's going on; but the positive thing is that dogs don't rationalize situations like we do, therefore they don't get as upset as us!
He'll soon adjust to his new routine; and the most important things to him will be what food he gets, and when he gets it!
Of course, if you're in a position to visit him, then all the better - but it will proabaly be you that benefits most from these visits ;)

This is all very easy for me to say of course, because I'm not in your unenviable position. Believe me, if I was, I'd be breaking my heart :(
I think it's really good of you to share your unfortunate experience, and to offer a warning to others.

I wish you well with your return to the UK, and with finding the best solution for you and Reggie.
It would be lovely to hear how it all goes, and how you find life back in the UK. Hope you continue posting on BE :)

Its such a shame for poor reggie, but if you are moving to the UK mid December then would it make it only 5 months in quarantine? I wish I could help reggie, but I live too far from you and my little pest will not have another dog in the house full-time.

This is just a thought ...but if you have his blood test now and get his results in say 2 weeks time the " quarrentine time " is 6 months from a positive blood test result. So if you don't move for another 2 months ( thought in your other thread that you said after xmas? Would he only have to stay in quarrentine for the remaining 4 months?? worth asking ?? I personally think that they are as well looked after in a Uk quarrentine centre as anywhere and I think you are allowed to visit,

I think the blood test results take a long time in Spain. My dogs was done in August and I was told 3 to 4 months for result. So its 6 months after blood result.! I honestly think its just another DEFRA stealth tax. I haven't heard of many domestic dogs going back with Rabies. Has anyone else?

Are the channel tunnel rats tested, or checked for a passport?

Just to add I was caught out on this one as well 'patsywhitehair'. Mine had had regular jabs and I thought that was it! I didn't ask the right questions of the vet obviously. :ohmy:

Why would they lake that long? We send them off 1st class and the results are back usually within 10 days.earlier if they E-mail them. you can only test fresh blood so they must just file the results untill they feel like sending them back to the vets! Unfortunatly for Reggie there is no way around it but as Brisca says dogs soon settle into what becomes their routine and have no concept of time so the only person that is truly upset is the owner..

OH and I are breaking up, he wants to go back to UK and wants to go back to work (he's 47) as we bought the villa between us he wants his half asap. sooooo rather than me stay here all alone, I live in the campo, feel better make the move now and start afresh in whitstable. have already got a flat lined up, so will have my furniture shipped back next week and it will be in the flat when i get back to uk in mid december. Que sera, thats life, as one door shuts another opens as they say.
I am hoping my friends out here will look after reg for the time being and i can pop backwards and forwards to see him, almost felt like smuggling the little fella in to UK (only joking), pat

Pat so sorry to hear your sad news,I hope you have taken some comfort from Brisca's kind comments,I'm sure your Reggie will settle with your friends no problem,its a lot better for him than going into quarantine ,it still must be so heart wrenching for you though.

Its not easy to see at the moment but these things tend to happen for a reason and hopefully soon you will see the light at the end of the tunel,my heart reaches out to you, its such a upheaval for you having to return to the UK , and without your reggie too.

Do try to keep positive and remember you have friends on here whom are wishing the best for you.

What a shame as It reads like you would prefer to stay in spain. No chance of two flats, one in each place?

I love spain but... on my own, I am a wimp i'm afraid and although i could probably afford a flat here it would clean me out financially , I have just rented a flat in UK and will go there in December. My friends have just said they will have reg for the 6 months (yes, they are sooooo kind) and I will pop over whenever I can and stay in my house and have reg for the odd week or 2, nothing much else I can do at this stage,didnt want to put him in kennels or quarantine really, cant imagine him cooped up for 6 months,pat
