Moving to the Pyrenees
 

My first post in the forums having joined this morning and can't find too much information on the subject.

We are a British family of four currently living in Ibiza where we have been for four plus years. Our children speak fluent Catalan and Castellano. We love living in Ibiza but after a few visits to the Pyrenees are absolutely in love with the idea of living in the mountains. Ibiza is a magical place but the summer time is getting more and more crazy busy with tourists, year on year. And the mountains have some weird powers of attraction!

My work is such that we can live anywhere I can get an internet connection

Are there any posters currently living in the Pyrenees?

I would love to hear of anyone's move to the mountains, what the toughest aspect is/ was? Anything at all would be really appreciated.

I'm sorry that I cannot speak for the Pyrenees. We live in the Basque country (Bizkaia), surrounded by mountains (eg Anboto, 1300m). My wife is Basque, which helps!
All I would say though, & I'm sure you've done so yourselves, is to live somewhere that isn't far from amenities such as schools, banks, shops etc.
Tourists flock to areas like Biescas, Formigal etc.
Our son recently purchased a run-down caserio for €200,000. Needs complete renovation, starting with a roof, for which they have no money of course! And it's got 8ha land.
Meanwhile they plan to live in a yürt; the elderly couple who lived there din't even have hot water! There's a fantastic school for their 5yr old daughter in Lekeitio, about 8km away.
Would anywhere around Jaca be too far from the Pyrenees? Or perhaps nearer to Catalunia for your children?

Hi Euskadi, thanks for taking the time to reply. It certainly seems like the mountain areas are not so popular with Expats :)

We had never considered anywhere so far West as your location. Our idea was to be in the Pyrenees within a not too long a drive to Barcelona for the times I get called to London for work. What would be your typical/ fastest route to get to London?

Your sons situation sounds perfect, good luck with the project. I'm sure you will be getting roped in to help :) One of the heart breaking things about Ibiza is the property prices, they are going absolutely nuts as the island attracts more and more of the VIP jet set. It genuinely felt like the island was full to bursting point this summer, tourist numbers reflect this.
