hi there,
moving to Benalmadena next week. Does anyone know if it is possible to take a small house plant on the plane? (had if 7 years and quite attached ) My removal firm says plants are restricted from their vans. Does anyone know if Spain allow in plants? Thanks

We had no problems with our removal company with bringing plants to spain, I would check again with your company. We used Union Jack and they were great.

Dont think theres too much of a problem bringing plants here ..... but I think you'll have to check with the airline to see if they will let you take it on the plane

Don't ask them. If you ask people they usually say no. I have taken plenty thru and never had a problem.

I even took a few small plum trees, had them xrayed and the guy thought it most amusing.

My attitude is that if they don't say you can't, and it is neither a nuisance or a problem, they have to let them thru.

That's for private people bringing personal garden plants. Commercial would be very different.

so long as the plant you are moving is not on any restricted list there is nothing stopping you travel anywhere in Europe so long as its not a commercial entity, ven then all you need is a plant license (free) from DEFRA

Bit of a blow though if you get sussed and they take the plant away from you and bin it!

The only problem is that if you are asking some little nonentity if it can go on the plane, their first response is often 'no' as that is easiest for them.

Mitz, I take account of that. I wanted to grow a couple of English plums out there to see if they would give me good fruit. I haven't ever seen the trees available out there, and the usual plums I think taste awful.

I figured that it was worth the risk. After all, I don't take much each time.

We have taken plenty of plants over in hold luggage not cabin luggage. Just pack it well, let the rootball dry out a little before wrapping it up, helps to make it lighter! When you arrive stand it in a bucket of water for an hour before repotting.

Only last week we bought four 3ft camelia trees to take over, they'll weather in the garden here until september when we take hold luggage again.

That's fine as long as it's not grafted or a slow growing plant.

Come to think of it, if can get handy at grafting, I could take out cut twigs in January and build up some interesting trees.
