Moving to Oliva
 

Hello Everyone,

We are hoping to move to the Oliva area in May 2012, with our Rottweiler and 3 cats. Are there many expats in the Oliva area? Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to find unfurnished property to rent.

We live forty Kms north of Oliva and like the town, there are one or two on this site that live there, no doubt they will be along shortly and will be able to answer your questions.

Yes, all chipped and with vaccination records from birth. We brought them out from England originally and have kept up their vaccinations. I have been hearing about Rottweilers having to be registered with the local town hall because they are classed as dangerous dogs, is this right?

Our last visit to Spain was in 2005 and we only visited Oliva briefly, but we really liked it then, so hope nothing much has changed. Finding accommodation, particularly with pets, is difficult with us being in Belize, hopping on a plane for a quick viewing isn't a possibility!

We stayed in Oliva in Jan 2004 when we were house hunting and liked it a lot and visited it regularly. There is so much going for it and the surrounding area.

I live just outside Oliva, but it is our main town for shopping.

Nothing much has changed apart from the new football stadium and a few new restaurants here and there.

Where are you aiming to live, the Old Town, New Town or Playa area?

Thanks for the links. Old Town would be nice, but we need somewhere with some outside space and hopefully some parking. To start with we are not fussy about area, just a nice, pet friendly house.

Old Towns no good for you then :)

You have Tossal Gros on the hill behind Oliva but you would need a car. The area near to the beach is nice and the properties are bigger

There are plenty of agents in the town

Definitely not the old town if you want somewhere to park. Oliva is a nice town, very Spanish with all the local fiestas throughout the year. A very good market every Friday and also all the necessary amenties i.e. shops, dentists, opticians, dry cleaners etc. Also a very good sports centre with indoor swimming pool. Not such a large English community now as many have returned to uk due to lack of work but still a fair amount of us pensioners!!.

You might consider one of the villages between Oliva and Gandia, Piles, Miramar and Diamus all within 3 - 5 mins from Oliva and 5 - 10 mins from Gandia by car and all with easy access to the fantastic beach.

Search the web for long term property to rent as there is quite alot available at the moment.

I do not think that Oliva has changed much (if at all) in the last 6 years. Some shops have closed and others opened and the passeo has been re-surfaced but for me the place still has the same atmosphere that it had in 2004.

Agree with Mitzy and Michael that the old town is out for you. I stayed at the top of it and found parking difficult but with loads of streets there is no parking and I often wondered where they all kept their cars as the few of the house seemed to have garages.

Michael has a point. You could look at Piles, La Font Den Carros, even Pego. However if you specifically want Oliva then for a villa and for what you want you would best be looking at something between the beach area and the new town. there are a lot of properties there that have land and parking space. Its not too far from the main area of shopping. Thats only if you are renting though, I'd be careful about buying there in as much of making sure the properties are fully legal.


I mentioned Tossal Gros ... you are five minutes or so away from Oliva and you will find villas with gardens. Theres a restaurant up there, childrens play areas etc.

Theres quite a few rental agents in the town. Ive seen flats advertised for €300 a month!

We love Oliva and have a holiday home at the bottom of the old town.
You don't say what you can afford but if I were looking to move full time to the town and wanted outside space I would go between the town and the beach along or off the Passeig de Fransisco Brines near the Parc Hort de la Bosca.
I don't know but the property looks pretty pricey to me.

I agree, its going to be pricey down there ... I think the properties are a lot more substantial and with land about them.

I'd love one of the beach front houses. they look small but they are huge, and unfortunately hardly ever come up for sale

Many thanks for all the information. Having looked at some of the properties for rent in Old Town now, none of them seem to have much garden and no parking so we will have a look at the outskirts of town and close villages that you have suggested. Is there much public transport available, or will we have to rely solely on car or feet.

I live in Piles, the next village to Oliva and yes there is a public bus service which connects Oliva to Gandia via Piles, Miramar, Bellerequard and Diamus with a published time table (not always exactly on time) also a service to the beaches but not sure about the times of that - not even sure whether it runs during the winter months as have never used it. Perhaps Mitzy knows about that one.
I believe in the summer months there is also a bus service to Madrid.

Gandia has a rail route to Valencia and connects to other rail networks.

Thanks Mitzboy will have a look at that, must admit don't use the bus myself although it practically goes by my house, getting old and lazy I guess, much prefer to drive to C4 and use the escalator !!

Would be useful though if ever the car is off the road for any length of time.

The rail service to Valencia is good news. Our son has applied to Valencia Business school to start in October, so maybe he could commute, at least to start with.

Its only just over €6 return Gandia to Valencia
Unfortunately there is no link between Denia and Gandia yet for trains

Wow, that's cheap. At that price it won't be worth him asking to borrow the car, which is good!
