Re: moving to andalucia
Dear Jandy,
I moved to Spain, alone in 1997 and I am still here ! before I did not stay anywhere more than 3 years, so no, it is not all that bad. There are some adjustments, of course, you are moving to a foreign country, but it has as many pluses as minuses. I know loads of people who have come here, and you will know within six months if you want to stay, so I really suggest strongly you try and rent for at least that time. I did, travelled about and looked at different areas, talked to people in different places, decided to avoid the Costas like the plague and ended up in La Linea which is near to Gibraltar and has an ex pat community but it is not like that El Dorado stuff. (the LAST place I thought I would end up !) As for animal cruelty, yes, it does go on, however, there are also loads of very wonderful people who spend their lives taking in and saving animals and the Spanish authorities are just starting to wake up to the idea and people are getting prosecuted.... but you have to be prepared you may see some things you will not like. However, my best friend, an abandoned Siberian Husky lives with me, a woman alone, in a completely spanish community with no roads and hardly any neighbours and I have no fear of this and have not been threatened in any way. Go on, give it a try, but do your six months probation and you will know for sure !!! oh, water shortages - I have my own well ! Estate agents - yes, watch your step, try and get recommendations, black money ? it works both ways ! Hope this helps, I have now sold up all in U.K. and have no intention going back.... Regards, LA . ] |

Regards, LA . ] Thank you so much for writing, you were very brave to go it alone I must say.Thank you for your comments and advise its appreciated. We are hoping to get out to Spain in a couple of months to have a look around the area where we want to go,which will be near the Competa or surrounding places. We wont be moving to the costa,s either, soley for the fact I love the country side. We were going to buy,but now we have decided we will rent long term,I think we will try and start some sort of business, has my husband does not want to retire yet.We are trying to do has much research has we can,we have been planning the move for sometime ,we just have a few loose ends here to tie up,I will not be leaving here with rose tinted glasses on,I am expecting some pitfalls, and to be honest it is quite scary when I think of selling my lovely house, but we are determined to make the move for various reasons.Reading some of the posts on this site has given me some insight, there have been people with really good experiences and others that I feel for, with awfull things that have happened.Im happy to hear that for you it has worked out and you are happy.Thank you for your support,Im sure if you keep a eye on this site you will follow our progress. Best Regards Jean:thumbup: |

Hi Guys, Brisca asked the other day why I haven,t started a thread about our forthcoming visit to Spain,I thought it more appropriate to re-start here.
As some of you are aware we are visiting Torrox on the 12th Sept, with a veiw to doing some research,we will be looking at properties to rent and also seeking the advise from a lawyer in respect of starting a business ( details at a later date) and hopefully opening bank accounts and starting the process of obtaining our NIE no,s  It has been a very busy few months here, mostly preparing our house to go on the market, the kitchen and bathroom are now complete,my O/H dug a thirty foot trench yesterday ready for the builder to build a wall at the bottom of the garden a week tom.As long has we think its viable when we return from Spain the house will go on the market...........:thumbup: I will be keeping you all posted on our progress, its six months since this thread was started and at last it appears some progress is being made. I am looking forward to our visit,if there is anyone who would be interested in a meet up PM me, we are hiring a car for the duration. Well if all goes to plan we are hoping to make the move ASAP........ Here is a pic of where we are staying........I will post more when we return  |
Re: moving to andalucia
Hey Jean! :)
Just popped on here briefly while O/H is having a siesta! Am currently making my way through a list of people to e-mail, but couldn't manage to type and eat an ice cream at the same time - so thought I'd read a couple of threads on here ;) It's great that you're sharing details of your trip  Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back. How long are you going for? Wow! The place you're staying looks fantastic. Hope you get all the things done that you want to do; and that you and hubby get some much deserved R&R too! I'm sure there will be several people keen to hear how your travels and adventures go, so make sure you keep a diary or something. I really hope there are people in the area who'd like to meet up. I can tell you from my experience with Chris W that it's great fun :) E-mail should make it to you by the end of the day ;) Love and hugs, Sam x |

Hi jandy
we bought off competa torrox road in july our kids are staying there at moment loving every minute of it .our house here in uk has just sold so as soon as contracts signed we are off and counting the days .we can reccomend the estate agent who was brilliant and is bending over backwards to help us even after the sale .they have put them selves out making sure our kids are ok at villa .(Grown up kids i must mention ) we dont want social services onto us ha!ha!he!:D .the solicitor we used known as miss 100% .fantastic very thorough and speaks excellent english making purchasing with great confidence.if she finds anything not right she will advise not to buy or to be rectified by vendor worth every cent. you may remember us from the thread dont do what we did . hope to all meet up in very near future. Good luck in your search and dont take too long looking lifes to short put your house up for sale now and get the interest of prospective buyers for when you return to Uk . Best regards colin & julie |

Re: moving to andalucia
Hi Jandy I just wanted to say I hope your enjoying yourselves and all is well. From what I saw of Torrox its looked like a nice place, quiet, and the beach was lovely. The drive to Competa freaked me out tho I'm not one for heights and it was a long time ago.
Good luck with everything and take care xx  |
Re: moving to andalucia
Hi, I can recommend Torrox, I live in the village and I love it, as do my wife and children. Shep. The pictures of a villa in the Torrox mountains look very much like those near a friend of ours who is on Monte Alegre. Beautiful. Except for the track of around a couple of km in the rain - and it DOES rain sometimes. And the spectacular views when you are in the clouds... We would have moved lock stock to Torrox-Costa or the Pueblo, but prices went from silly to ridiculous, so we moved inland and got a lot more house and neighbourhood for our money. Our favourite pastime was sitting in the square people watching whilst taking tapas at Aries or the one next door. It's changed quite a bit now, though. Happy days...(sigh) |
