If you want to join our group of movie fans (in English), we go to the movies on Fridays.

There are several cinemas in Madrid which show films 'VO' - in the original version with subtitles - instead of the rather more common 'dubbed into Spanish' version that we get in the pueblos and the 'cines de verano' (open-air cinemas).
The dubbing industry, much larger in Spain than elsewhere in Europe, is an unfortunate hang-over from Franco's times.

Loads of VO cinemas in Madrid - although it doesn't say so, most of the cinemas on this link are version original:

My favourite used to be Cinema Verdi (near the Quevedo and Canal metro stops). Not too many tourists here - mainly Spanish going to keep in touch with their English or Swedish; plus lovers of film naturally.

If you go to one of these cinemas make sure to be punctual; they won't show half an hour of adverts prior to starting which is normally the case in the UK (even in art-house cinemas)

I'm actually a fan of dubbing as it means Spanish people dont fall for all the Americanisms that the English and Northern Europeans do!

But yes, lots of VO films are shown in BCN and Madrid. When watching a good film (not many of those about nowadays) much better to watch in VO with subtitles

It's more likely the VO cinema would be showing a good film, rather than "Spiderman 50" or "The A team" or whatever the latest hit is in the national cinema. There again, horses for courses, you may prefer the big budget type of film.
