Move to Gibraltar advise please

Hello

I have been trying to move to Gibraltar for many years and need some info
please.I am a British citizen living in the UK.When I make my way to
Gib I do have a place to stay until I get employment and have been
told I can use it as my address for a while.I would like to
know what banks are based in Gibraltar as my own bank here does not
have a branch outside the UK mainland. What are the steps I need
to take when I arrive in Gib,Do I have to registrar for seeking
employment, do I have to have an address to start looking for
work?Is there a job center in Gib?I have been to Gib over 50
times but have not been back for over 10 years so have lost
track of how things are over there.I would if possible ask others
here the following, what exact steps did you take when moving
there.I myself am willing to do any type of work from shop work
to security work, all I really need to know is how did other members
start off in Gibraltar.

Any advise is welcome thank you

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Rosemary

Hi movetogib

Banks http://www.gibyellow.gi/search-resul...&search=search

Employment, yes you do have to register with the ETB, Employment and Training Board which is also the Job Centre and you do need an address.

I moved here so long ago that my experiences are not relevant in todays world.

More information can be found in the Free Beer section at the top of this page, scroll to the bottom for Gibraltar links.

know the feeling Fred, sometimes the "youngsters" look at me weird like when I am rash enough to claim I can go back over 50 years of technology growth.
Like sex, they seem to think they invented it or it has always been there.
And the thought of Dad doing it is GROSS.

I'm not sure, but I would advise you to go with every bit of paper you can collect.

We still use our UK bank, although no branch here, our salaries are paid to the UK account. We also have free cash withdrawal worldwide (for a fee), and could be worth checking with your card issuer if they offer it. AFAIK, none of the Gib banks have such an offer (great for when you go to Spain).

When it comes to the ETB, until you have your Gib card, you would not be able to use their facilities. From what I hear, there is not much help to get there. Unlike a few years back, recruitment agencies would be a better bet (pun intended!)

Hope that makes sense!

Good luck with the move:)

Note to self, make sure you include vital words and the correct terms

It should have said Gib ID Card, or I suppose it is called something like civilian registration card when not born in Gib.

Still not making much sense today though, so will stop now before I confuse this even more :(

I Know a bit more then I did before, I can just tell the ETB are going
to be a problem,So its true that even as a UK citizen I cant do anything
without them saying so first,I am getting conflicting info all over the web,
some places say I don't need a work permit as I am British, the more I
look into working in Gib the more complex it gets,My relations in gib cant
help as they were born there and don't have this problem.I still cant find
step by step instructions on the web about the process needed registrar
in Gibraltar.I did come across those employment agencies in Gibraltar
while searching the web for more info,They stated Only Gibraltarians
and British citizens are allowed to live and work in Gibraltar without a
residence permit

Hi movetogib

You stated that you were a British Citizen, but in general the rules apply to EU citizens.

For further information on ID / Civilian Registration:-
http://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/images/s...ance_notes.pdf

My own experience of Government departments anywhere is they can be very negative so persistence, patience and paperwork are of prime importance.

Many people move to Gib so the problems are not insurmountable and having family there should help.

ETB has two functions, one as a job centre and secondly where you register when you have a job. To check the jobs they have on file, you need to have either of the ID cards.

For registering, the HR department will help you with the forms.

And as long as you are an EU citizen, you are perfectly fine to live and work in Gib, or even live in Spain and work in Gib.

Hubby and I moved over 5 years ago, and it was a smooth process and not at all tricky.

Hope that helps

Thank you, I am probably making mountains out of mole hills and
worrying about problems that have not yet,and probably wont
occur. Its probably the fact that I have been planning to do this
for over 20 years and kept putting it off,Now the time has come
to actually start to move and put plans in place,I am starting to
worry.I have done all I can over this end so within the next 3-6
months I will have to make my way over to Gibraltar,I hope being
half Gibraltarian helps me a bit.I do understand employment is
very scarce in Gib,on the up side I will take any Job to start off
with then after a while of getting a good work history over there
try to set higher goals. Thanks for all your input everyone.
