Motorway Tolls A22 Algarve
2 separate people have been stopped at the customs/Toll post today and been given retrospective bills for toll use going back up 2 years.
Both people were driving Spanish vehicles. One bill was for 200 euros and the other 500 euros
BEWARE

The cameras record the reg number for each trip and the Portuguese have been gradually catching up with those who have not paid their tolls.

Do they now have NPR or is it the usual pull a load of cars over and checking plates against a list

Although that bit over the bridge is a 70kmh and the police regularly wave people over just there, they also cone off one lane and put in a chicane.
All the gantries have ANPR - that's how the Easytoll system for foreign cars works. It would be simplicity itself to have a feed from the Tavira gantry (last one on the A22) which identifies the cars passing which are not registered on the database and flash up an alert at the border.

When I referred to NPR I was asking if the police have NPR fitted to their cars or mobile ones, linked in to the tolling system. If so then you could be pulled over anywhere in the Algarve. It does not have to be on the motorway. If that's not the case then they may be just going on a occasional fishing expedition and stopping cars at random and seeing if their plates have outstanding charges against them.

I doubt they will have NPR, however they will have a good quality notebook, pencil and torch and of course a whopping big gun and leather boots!!
At least by stopping and fining they will mange to cover the wages and fuel for the next couple of days.

Although I expect that Portuguese police cars are as likely to have ANPR as they are in the UK, the Portuguese actually have a much more modern information infrastructure than the UK as they started so much later and most of the UK infrastructure is beginning to wear out or become outdated

That, and a good pair of eyes or someone parked up the road, is NPR

There are ANPR cameras at the on/off slip roads at the m/roundabout just before the bridge so if they are connected to the joint police post at the customs post in PT then they would have 3/4 mins warning that you were coming from Spain!
